The inclusion bar: two or more independent sourced evidence families. This profile is reachable but not in the ranked index. It is a statement about how much evidence we hold, and about nothing else.
We have not established fit. That is not a soft no and not a soft yes — it is unknown, and it is never counted as a qualified prospect.

Sharpest miss on record: “Yahoo will use the proceeds from the Alibaba IPO to go on a massive acquisition spree.” — Yahoo did not use the Alibaba IPO proceeds to launch a massive acquisition spree; instead it sold its stake, rebranded to Altaba, and ultimately sold its core assets to Verizon.

there's going to be chapters of this story that you can mark by the different times that Yahoo discussed buying Google and didn't.
they tried to sell PageRank to Yahoo for $1 million and were rejected.
Scott leaves, starts a company called eGroups. That company, a couple of years later, ends up getting acquired by Yahoo, becomes Yahoo Groups for about $400 million.
the portals all had this mentality of, we want to build more and more and keep people on our site, in our ecosystem, continue to look at our banner ads. And Google from this point, basically forever was how quickly can we deliver someone something relevant so they can leave Google and have had a good experience finding what they really wanted.
Yahoo was human hand curated commentary, you know, directory of websites.
listen associated content was up for sale for two to three years no but no bites it's clear that what's happening on the internet is as michael arrington i think fairly called it the mcdonalds of content the creating of mcdonalds of content
I think it's an interesting interesting deal for Yahoo I think it was a little surprised it was yahoo and not a 0 l most people say was very uninteresting yeah the analyst i think everything is interesting like a word that you choose to be polite interesting is you sort of look at know if you sort of look at yahoo right now i mean they're clearly they're clearly struggling clearly sort of looking for you know a big opportunity and focusing a lot on content and on having exclusive some access to
there's only two or three companies in the world who can really decipher that at scale and then match the right content to it and that's where a company like Yelp can benefit right because we can match the right listing and then provide the Yelp review
I'm very impressed with Yelp I think they're very good at what they do where I see it being very complimentary is for example you know we're really focused on the local search problem right now
we actually treat users submissions as very important information and if someone wants to come and snap a few pictures with their iPhone at Bay Street deli and an upload to Yahoo they can do that right so we think that's a huge value prop
I think in the future you'll see that kind of ecosystem emerge where Yahoo local and Yahoo in general is a place where local content can proliferate
I think companies are doing well there on the content site is very very fragmented right now and we think that's actually one area where we can add value because we're not asking companies to become you know have national coverage for something like coupons
users love it first of all because they want to complete tasks so when you can give them a shortcut to what they're actually looking for as long as it's relevant and we're very particular on our confidence levels around being able to understand the queries and yeah serve against them so we have a very high threshold there as long as you're relevant I think users love it
Yahoo get to put the result right up top
the local search business is really dominated by Google and Yahoo because we have the search engines right so we can catch people at the top of the funnel
our value proposition is really around task completion we want to get you in and out the data and information you need as soon as possible
it's kind of the one of the leading local destination sites in the web sure it's a very large one of Yahoo's largest properties they handle about a billion five searches every year Wow we have over 20 million uniques
if you look at the biggest guys on the web space um all of them didn't worry about revenue for a long time well Google Yahoo um other folks in their YouTube none of these guys worried about making making a dollar at first and what they worried about is making audience
the only company that really would want to do that and in is Yahoo with their delicious acquisition uh flicker Community Based uh images which is also an incredible search Project product it's probably the best image search available out there delicious the best sort of social search product out there uh but they couldn't put it together and also Yahoo had answers right
yahoo is dead it's kind of interesting like the yeah we can talk you want to tell me that all day i don't really want to bring a train wreck followed by a train wreck basically it's like somebody ran over them in the car and then like a horse ran over them and then you know yeah scooped it up and then a nuclear bomb it's just terrible then the earth grew back bring jerry back that's what i say like how do we get him back you know yeah that would be great then the coming to goes sideways another
Yahoo, Google, IBM, Microsoft, every big company. It takes forever to make decisions.
they had been originally hosted at Netscape it was like the sort of famous they had no servers so Mark and dreon gave them bandwidth
we had partnered with uh Yahoo Jer Dave we ran uh several pieces of the of the Yahoo properties we ran their White Pages we ran stuff
Yahoo bought that you know we rebranded it to Yahoo mail
I think you know Yahoo's got some interesting stuff
Yahoo is going to roll their own uh login open ID system
but you haven't gotten the Yahoo or the ESPN to switch yet
if you've got a machine over here that's making billions of dollars if you're ESPN or Yahoo and you've got billions of dollars of Revenue in this and you look at this little tiny thing that makes 10 million dollars or 50 million dollars or even 100 million dollars it's not moving the needle correct
Yeah this is um this was not a good move uh because it's there's no substance to the announcement I would rather take a Steve Jobs like approach which is hey it's Steve and let me show you three exciting things show not tell and so what they've basically done is they've come out and said hey we're going to be a billion people we're going to get 10 billion of Revenue whatever it is we're going to make this better we're going to make that better it doesn't matter in in a world where you have Steve
I would talk to friends who said oh Yahoo that's for old people right so Yahoo photos could be the most Innovative product in the world if they think it's for old people sure they're not going to use it
when you put a Hollywood guy or a businesswoman you know and not a product person in charge of an internet company I don't think you can compete
if I was running Yahoo I would have taken the people who made Flicker and delicious and put them in charge of creating a social network and a video service and all these great things and what did they do they chased the smartest brains out of the place who all wrote These scathing goodbye letters I mean it's just unbelievable that it was never a product Centric company
if I could have run Yahoo five years ago right um what I would have done was open source a platform as soon as possible CU they were doing a lot of interesting Acquisitions oh yes flicker delicious all these sorts of different things the best and in theory these things could be the Twitter's and the Facebooks of the day right but the problem with all these Acquisitions is the off and we have the same problem the integration cost
it should have been Yahoo in my opinion yeah I mean that it really the guy who sells books is going to make cloud storage system work it's it's really embarrassing for Yahoo for Jerry Yang
we have a popular iPhone app and it's a it's a very frustrating development platform right but they did include to their credit a monetization system to actually sell software
iPhone is by far the best platform I've ever used in a mobile device I love it
over the next 10 to 20 years I think that this centralization is essentially a temporary Arbitrage of the network and CPU and memory speed of aggregating all these things
when I had Flickr this is the thing that pissed me off about Flickr when Yahoo bought it I I pay for every year then I stopped I missed my payment because like iy had the same credit card in there so three years they do the same credit card that credit card dies I got a new credit card right experation date whatever cut it in half then they're like oh you can't see your sets your sets are there but you can't see them and I'm like you know it's a really de move it was a real deag move like well I
we're here to make money and we're making money but we're here make money in the long term uh we're not trying to do anything to kind of squeeze every last dollar out of someone right away so the best way that we found and we've got really great stats to back this up the best way that we found to get somebody to pay is to make them feel like they never have to pay and give them enough time to fall in love with a product and then they just want to pay and they just do normally and so we just you
the more you use it the longer someone uses it the more likely they are to start paying even if they don't need any of the premium features just because you know once you've got your whole life in there you you feel like it's valuable you just you kind of want to pay for it
the number one reason people give on surveys when we ask why did you why did you pay is because I love Evernote
we really treat the free version as the central version of Evernote we're constantly improving it we want it to be good enough for the vast majority of people and uh once if you really love it um then if you need some power user features then you can you can upgrade for five bucks a month to the premium version and that that works really well that as a business model that that's worked fantastically well for us
what are you left with you left with a boutique service that they probably shouldn't have spent $25 or $30 million on hey but that's how it goes you spend $25 million on delicious you spend $25 million on flicker one doesn't work out even though it's a great service the other one's worth probably $200 million
Yahoo blew it in terms of using this this was an asset that they were going to use for search the idea was that if you know and it was back to human powered search years ago it was bought under the premise that if we have this really good data set of what people are bookmarking in real time we can have use that data to make search results better well since that time you have Twitter and Facebook and people are sharing links on bitly and you so you have maybe a little bit of a faster data set goi
I think the problem is the service is probably going to cost a million dollars a year to keep up and running it's got to cost 50 25,000 to $50,000 in service per month at least so that's 300 600,000 right there you put two or three programmers on it in a product manager now you're at a million bucks and so now you know why it's getting you know shut down is because they probably have a million or two million users who are dedicated and those users if they were willing to pay $10 if 10% would pay
the search traffic doesn't mean that they won't be a profitable business in other ways doesn't mean that maybe it was the wrong decision it's just that as a search player I don't think that their their future is strong it's basically over they're going to ride that search traffic down it becomes like mypace with a search box you get some sort of residual effect
they had gone in the space of a year from a deal that was going to be paying them I think it was like a billion dollars and worth billions over time they were actually G to get paid for the technology to a deal which was you give up your technology and we'll let you keep 85% of what you sell
we're still waiting to see whether or not they're going to deliver on this we can we can build an interface that it doesn't matter who Powers us it's just an Intel Inside type of ch that's never convinced me I don't think they'll be successful with it I think they're going to go the same route as say lios and any other portal went that if you give up your technology you lose
I think a tragedy in the leadership you you have Yahoo that's being in some ways unfairly compared to Google like why are you not as profitable as Google not not why are you just doing so profitable right you know they were not a weak company they were not a bad company they had all these big successes but they were being measured up against Google which seemed to be succeeding even more and they just seem to lose faith in themselves and the solution was well let's dump all this stuff and maybe
Yahoo which was doing incredibly promising stuff in my opinion with Yahoo boss allowing users to or or through apis to basically um how would you describe with an API you could uh well anybody could create their own search engine and tap into their database white label search engine tap to database use your own algorithm
not building any original technology when it comes to search now we basically have two people building a new technology uh one is Google one is Microsoft with Bing
which puts combined uh uh being and and uh Yahoo uh somewhere around the 20 to to 30% range
they decimated Yahoo and basically gutted them out buying off um all their search technology
produce original programming do a 12-month what we call third party exclusive with Yahoo or MSN which meant it would be on their site and on our site no one else would get to distribute it well Along Came something called YouTube which kind of killed the exclusive licensing business online
you have Yahoo and MSN back then who had Millions if not tens or hundreds of millions and were they paying you money or even better they had ad sales teams
we were able to do some exclusive licensing deals with Yahoo and MSN
I mean Google monetizes at $40 per unique user
I thought social was going to solve everything it's not doesn't perform as well I don't think it does and I don't think it ever will I really you don't so the entire premise of Facebook is that they will figure out social advertising I don't believe that I believe really no I don't I what I believe is that Facebook will be a brute force uh kind of business model where you have massive amounts of traffic and you can force lots of lots of business models that sort of a logical business models into
I saw Google coming right and remember I'd been disrupted by Google's a private company at this point they were small smaller and getting bigger under a thousand people I was I was envious of Google
yahooo you know it used to mean search it was that verb that Google has become today but they got distracted right they started doing all this other stuff they bought you know broadcast.com they had co-branded Visa cards they had a magazine they had their logo on mice and keyboards and Fries it was you know ridiculous and their directory was rotting it was you know 8% dead links when we measured it in 1998 and you'd submit a site to Yahoo and they wouldn't put it in right they just couldn't keep
Google will not make an editorial call they'll say we've tweaked the algorithm and this device the algorithm will magically figure out what's quality and what's not do you buy that when they say that like oh my God the algorithm did this or is it pretty clear that they're also making an editorial decision but maybe afraid to say that well that's exactly right I mean of course it's editorial right the
Google you know I think they had to respond but the update you know to our eyes it wasn't that dramatic you know they they said 12% of their queries had changed but in some cases it was just you know one and two traded places you had eHow and answer bag and now it's answer bag and eHow and they count that as a changed result page but you know all the same results are still there you know maybe you know you know bazillions went from number two to number three or you know further down the page but
we have about three billion Pages
nobody's been able to attract audience in you know the past decade nobody's launched a search product that actually got people to come and use it and uh I think we're actually the first to do that
search makes so much money online the cpms are $50 to $100
Yahoo you know it used to mean search it was that verb that Google has become today but they got distracted right they started doing all this other stuff they bought you know broadcast.com they had co-branded Visa cards they had a magazine they had their logo on mice and keyboards and Fries it was you know ridiculous and their directory was rotting it was you know 8% dead links when we measured it in 1998 and you'd submit a site to Yahoo and they wouldn't put it in right they just couldn't keep
it was definitely a lesson in Clayton christensen's innovator dilemma um you know in the beginning of markets Integrated Solutions beat disintegrated Solutions the solution was they own the OS they own the player they own the store they own the hard headon right disintegrated solution we were built on top of Windows media DRM music net was our now Media Net was our our sort of Licensing layer um we built the software and then you had Samsung Toshiba creative iiver whoever there was just no way t
I think he's going to get lost at adtech. There's too much competition. Don't I think going to an adtech and or some conference like that, you'll be just lost in translation.
Nobody on the internet knows if you're a dog. Nobody on the internet knows if you're in Singapore or if you're in Europe or if you're in the United States. I Tyler was in Helsinki for one of the shows last week. Nobody even knew that he was in Helsinki if I didn't tell them.
We have guaranteed premium placement.
We do a revenue share with them. Um, and we always appear, which is nice. You don't have to deal with the SEO competition.
As of yesterday they temporarily suspended the implementation because of some technical issues.
we have a deal now with Yahoo and of course you know we're very interested in working with the other two players as well um on integrating Red Beacon into their search experience.
you'll pay them directly. Um and the reason is because a lot of times we find with our the nature of our types of services um the prices will change. And so let's say you're having your roof repaired or you're having a hot water heater installed and they like come up with something else that needs to be done. So then what'll happen is um one side or the other will report the final price paid at the end of the job and we'll adjust what we charge them.
the basic verification is something that we're considering just covering. It's it's essentially uh making checking the National Sex Offender Registry and uh just making sure that they are who they say they are. If you want to go and do like the detailed like county records checks where some guy is actually digging it up and verifying their licenses and their local kind of criminal past, um that's a little bit too expensive to cover, but I would think that the basic verification is is uh probably
we actually don't make any money on that. We just pass our costs that we've negotiated on to the provider. Um the basic verification is free. Uh all they have to do is offer us their credit card number and then we can verify their identity. Um if they want to do a little bit more in depth criminal record check, sex offender, etc. um they give us their social security number and we charge them there's a couple of tiers but basically $10 um to uh to do the verification and then we show that badge
we said why don't we you know protect the consumer's privacy not share the information but just share the job details and the zip code and if the business is interested they'll bid on it and at that point if you select them then we share the contact info and we take a 10% commission on the value of the job from the service provider.
We wanted to only bring back five that what we think are the four or five best quotes. Think of it as the solving the paradox of choice problem because no one else if you're browsing you don't know if that service provider is going to be available. You don't know if they're interested in your job. You don't know how much they're going to charge you. And so at that point you're doing the same amount of work you were doing when you were just using the telephone and calling local businesses. We wan
companies develop a certain way of things it's like you and I as we grow older we get set in our ways ... we all become calcified in our intellectual abilities and I think that's what happens to companies too
why is the board of Yahoo putting Carol Barts in charge Board of AOL putting Tim in charge uh or Microsoft putting Steve bomber essentially another sales guy he came from the sales channel in charge why do they do that and not find a product Visionary they don't trust the product people
if you look at you know Carol bar doesn't really have a his any any um historical you know uh presence in the internet
I think it has a lot to do with how the The Arc structure of of of Facebook Yahoo Microsoft they try and create teams of like 50 to 100 people to work on a little feature or a product whereas Facebook puts like four or five people to one product or new feature
the entire Google model we sold that for about a billion for to Yahoo would worth 200 billion as Google or let's say it's half Google success is worth 100 billion right
we publish aggressively of course our content into the Facebook stream and into the Twitter stream
we are fully totally committed to allowing people to access our content and personalize it as quickly and however they want and I think it took us a while to come around to that of course you know as being a large scale identity provider ourselves on the internet but ultimately again this goes back to yahoo realizing with clarity we want to be the world's largest premium digital media company
Yahoo makes a overwhelming majority of its company revenue as a media company from advertising
the big thing we're working on this year is building out a central content platform across media so today you know I run what are six or seven verticals globally each one of those is often built on its own code base in every country we operate in so for me to innovate at scale is impossible today right impossible and you see that in our product in many cases we're moving everything to a central content platform that allows us to now essentially innovate in a single place and run a configuration
i think what we are trying to do is invest in products that we know are core to where we want to go and there are products that we have that that aren't great but they do they do well we're doing what they do right but then you leave yourself subjected to the potential of someone coming in and do math mass innovation
people critique yahoo for being not focused yeah and for not having a brand identity yeah and at the same time they want every product we build to or that we launched within the last 15 years to continue to be leading the industry right and that's just not I mean it's not practical now
yql is probably the the biggest legacy of that whole initiative in terms of a product that the developers really love
why did yahoo buy into now ... roughly sixty percent of the time you're watching TV you're in front of your laptop or some other device ... the ability to have a product like this be able to give you something to share and learn and and to you know to play with as you're watching TV and share out to your friends what you're checking out is huge from an engagement perspective and then in terms of advertising ... some pretty cool stuff and I think really has the opportunity to to kind of change ho
definitely displays Yahoo's bread and butter
Shine ... it's actually our fastest-growing site in terms of users mean women's lifestyle so it's focuses on fashion beauty mom pneus parenting that sort of thing
if I'm a young developer and I'm thinking about my career look there's a lot of places you can choose to work but I wouldn't discount what you get somewhere at Yahoo which is the ability to work a scale
when you look at who we compete with in a content publishing business world in most cases we're competing with local or regional media companies right we can bring to bear in markets around the world ... I think yahoo can bring a technology to publishing that really in most cases the local media players we're competing against don't have
Yahoo is competing in the content world but we also have a technology underpinning our are for example are our entire content grid is running on Hadoop we're the largest contributor to open source Hadoop on the internet right so we're we're investing heavily in platforms and technologies
I think we're certainly competing for ad dollars okay and you're certainly competing for overall reach on the internet okay but i think the types of products we develop are not the same we're not building the same product as google we're not building a social eve
we're now saying yahoo is the premium digital media company okay right and so what that means is think about the major competition in the internet space Google Facebook Microsoft AOL we are the place where you can come get great content on global scale with science and technology behind it
the numbers don't seem to be trending down on yahoo right I mean am I wrong you're saying that have they trended oh no no not in any substantial way
i think is yahoo's the place to go for that
overwhelming majority of people feel comfort with yahoo AOL and they've been there for years and I think they still return because they feel a certain comfort with it and it solves a really simple need
I think that's gotten lost in all the news in all the drama around the corporation as you've mentioned over the last few years is still just the size of audience that these content products generate
yahoo has nine out of the top 10 original videos on the internet okay and collectively are more people watch yo original videos then visit hulu
TV anchors the number one most watched original video on the internet prime time in no time which recaps what was on TV last night
yahoo movies i think has really made its itself known as ranking trailers so we get a lot of exclusive trailers from the studios you know if a movie is coming out often the studio will exclusive make it exclusive on yahoo movies for a few weeks usually it yahoo movies and itunes are kind of the two different places the studio zoloft in place
yahoo movies we battled back and forth with IMDb for number one the category
OMG is number one in its category comscore
I think it's the number two mail service globally
it's the number one own page in the US for people coming in to check out news and information
12 products that are number one in comscore
globally 600 million uniques per month in the u.s. it's a 187 million okay which you know actually makes it the most visited site on the internet more than Google more than Facebook in the u.s. in terms of unique visitors
I think what Yahoo's done pretty well is figured out the mainstream Internet user
your user numbers are pretty damn consistent
when eBay got started Yahoo tried came in and Amazon Yahoo auctions were going to kill them and Amazon auctions and they both offered free auctions while Amazon well while eBay was was pay yeah and you know eBay thrived and survived
it was no different at Yahoo, right? We we always, you know, there's an abundance of display ads at almost any big portal that are insanely low CPMs and where they make a lot of their money. I mean, it for us it was um a minority of our page views, but but you know, at least 50% of our total revenue came from the big sponsorships.
when I was at Yahoo that was ultimately bought um it was bought by MySpace.
I think there's just a fundamental difference between, you know, what Umare Hawk calls media 1.0 and media 2.0, right? And I think that you had a lot of media 1.0 I know guys trying to and and women trying to apply that model to the new world and and not acknowledging that we're not going to have hits in the same
Yahoo had decided to go from being a tech portal to being a media company. They brought in Terry Seml and then Lloyd Braun and Lloyd Braun and they hired a lot of people and it was all going to be about music and video and LA in a way that's where the internet is arriving now. So I sort of feel like some of their vision wasn't terrible.
Yahoo was still a very powerful company um and still somewhat on the ascendancy definitely.
Yahoo was interested in us though because they wanted to build their own subscription service, right? Not unlike Spotify is today or RDO is today.
Yahoo bought us in December of 03... for you know a decent return about a seven and a halfx
we could have a good exit and we could also have a great exit for our contributors um and and and whether in the yahoo scenario that's really why it made the most sense
every day we get we get higher quality contributors we get more sort of known commodities
i think you know even as recently as you know last week with a hurricane you know we we we had the best sort of first-hand coverage i think out there i think cnn i report does a great job um and and along with them you know i think we're really doing a great job of of owning that
one of the advantages to being at yahoo is that you know we kind of own big events and getting contributors involved in that whether it's you know the olympics uh or right now or 911 or even you know things that happen in the short term
there's pieces of content that have gotten you know millions of page views you know no doubt about it
you know we are hiring uh and and getting people is um is key ... to work at yahoo scale is very intriguing um how does how does a model work you know when you have things like um you know you know 13 or 14 number one front pages to work with uh when you can mix it with you know the highest end editorially you know curated content original content in the world and you can really be involved in that kind of mix
working at a company like yahoo obviously they've been a little beat up in the press um does that impact your ability to operate and to recruit people ... i think you know hiring talent is is the number one sort of objective of anybody who wants to start anything uh but if you're working in content to work at yahoo scale is very intriguing
we're starting to get much much more deeply involved in video
i think we're pretty aggressive about figuring out the best you know the best content model um i think that's that's evolving you know i think we used to be you know very dependent on on a few different licenses of associated press and other things and while we still maintain those and and push those we're looking at new things like like ycn
we're all about trying to collect the highest quality content we can we consider ourselves the premier digital media company um you know we have you know as sports and news and finance go if we're not number one in every single one of those categories we're number two
it's been it's been great experience you know as you know um you're either working at startups or you're working at a company that works at scale there's very few of those companies working at scale right now
we're at a point right now where you can look at a given day and 15 of the content that's on a site like yahoo sports is coming uh from its users through to the yahoo contributor network
yahoo made the most sense because it provided by far and still does today the biggest opportunity for for the user or the semi pro person or whoever to participate in in in in the world's biggest you know premier media company
yahoo's you know traditionally been in the business of not having a lot of um uh you know sort of you know voice known voice and that's something that we're working on now um and this is really one of the first starts of that which is that um you know a platform like ycn you know can add a whole new level of voice to sports news and finance and those kinds of things not only does it give users the opportunity to be participants and improve engagement but it also increases the depth and breadth d
there are times when we don't edit some content for example if i have a beat writer who is constantly writing and has been writing for us for five years and does a spectacular job and is writing up to the minute news on earthquake conditions in the chesapeake bay region and it's real-time content we want to get it out there and it's newsy that might auto publish
if it ends up on the network it you know at least gets looked at by one person
about 20 percent of our content now is uh makes its way on to the network that's that's the focus of our content is to be uh yeah contributor network is really supposed to be about powering you know the all of the number one and top sites that yahoo boasts
every single piece of content that we publish here except for very rare cases which have to do with some of our most experienced contributors in certain sorts of in particular formats are edited by human beings
we're not about.com so we don't have an authority piece on on um on how to navigate a certain fly fishing river in alaska we might have five or six of them
now we really pay people every way you could possibly get but we try to pay people any way that we possibly can... which now includes things like beats
we always efforted to front people at least some of that money over time... and we still do that today
we we welcome anybody to publish we don't pay everybody but um necessarily but um but we but we keep an open platform uh we we think we do better with you know um you know with over a half a million contributors than with uh when then with 64 who run 64
they basically um condemned the uh associated content office uh and uh moved us into a more traditional structured cubicle security setting our office space that associated content was uh was basically a a leaky roof kind of operation so the first thing that yahoo did uh was get us out of there
the real issue here is um for Tim Armstrong this is making him look really bad because he's I mean as Caris swier pointed out it's a public company and this is Shenanigans and public companies have Shenanigans uh the board and the shareholders they get um upset nervous and they get nervous like what if Tim can't control this blogger yeah that's going to be the perception then why would I own the stock a and people are not going to buy AOL stock or they're going to sell AOL stock and AOL stock is
why don't they just get they should gift Yahoo to Zuckerberg is true for 20% of Facebook and they just be like his news product face Facebook news
they are just they can't even play catchup I mean at the very least you should be able to steal products as fast as Mark Zuckerberg does
the team at launch is making a list of all the things Carol B Barts launched it is a complete disaster
Carol BS came in shut down all the video assets all the video assets remember they had the they had a Ustream like live or something and they they had all this great product in video and they shut everything down now everybody's sold out on video and everybody's fighting over Hulu
if I was running the company I would say it is the it's a Content company I will go full bore into video content uh and text
they missed out on buying hington post
the majority of their traffic is coming from people who want email still a lot of people still use that Yahoo mail and a lot of it's the news Finance product Sports product just general news
there are individual Yahoo products that I think totally still defensible uh Finance Sports I would probably ditch a lot of the other stuff and just figure out where people were still engaged with Yahoo and expand those
the only reason I go to Yahoo is when I go to a cafe and you know you have to trigger the like log into this internet connection screen so I type in why and it goes to and then it like loads in the Starbucks screen and then I click through so you basically want to go to yahoo.com you're basically saying it's the shortest URL you could type in
they severed that tie it seems weird that they didn't have it doesn't seem like they had much of a contingency plan though
what I find fascinating about Carol Bartz's tenure at Yahoo is that as a great operations person she didn't put somebody in the top position and just say to them listen copy the best things going on in the industry quickly if Yahoo just kept adding great features like you know they added to flicker like the Instagram stuff right they I if it was me I just go downstairs to the people fck like listen you make me an iPad app an iPhone app that has exactly what Instagram's doing just copy it pixel b
it's very niche some people will get involved in the comments I mean I wish them well and they're smart guys but um I I think that what they're really doing is building a search engine
they're going to try to nail the user experience that uh that everyone was waiting for Yahoo to to nail after they acquired a geeky Tool
I predict this thing is going to be sold within the next couple of months that's what this is telling me
it's a really bad sign but there was there's also a historical when when Jack was kind of uh voted out yeah Fred and Bon were part of that vote right so maybe Jack coming back in and taking more of a prominent position it's just a it's a it's a this is one of those startups that I think is like in a way it's cursed like it feels just like the the flipping of management and CEO role and now board role that's just way too much to go on for this company to be successful
Yahoo has more than Google
I like making my own mess not cleaning out someone else's
Yahoo's been trying for a decade to screw up I mean they have done everything they can do to destroy that company yet they are still in the top five internet companies
if you look at inflection points on the curve that was one of those big things all of a sudden nobody thought about the business anymore they thought about where they were going to live and there was this massive debate going on are we a Content company or are we a services company are we going to improve our email client improve search uh improve you know photo sharing or are we going to come up with puppets reading the news you know and and that was like this this big religious debate
I said to the AOL guys you guys should go home tonight and get down on your knees and thank God that Yahoo is so stupid because they just destroyed the company and because everybody starts woring about do I have to move to LA where making public kids in school that's what destroyed yaho
it's great to see that they're finally admitting they are a content and services company but their their head of product Blake Irving is awesome i' I've known him personally for a lot of years ever long before I ever got into even Tech and I think if anyone's got a chance to help really spur an effort to build amazing products within Yahoo he's going to do it
ross is now uh running pretty you know in this interim and hopefully they choose him a ceo because he's a great guy he'd be a great choice i think he would be a perfect choice as ceo
bands like My Chemical Romance for example that uh we uh were able to identify early on and produce a big push that eventually gave Warner Brothers the impetus to go and spend a lot of money that then made them Platinum stars
we created a we created a me a metric called the exit rate which was measuring how long somebody listen to a song to be able to determine do people listen to long periods of the song or did they bail out of the song quickly
Yahoo music in the mid 90s in the mid 2000s was the largest music video outlet online uh and then the radio player launchcast which in some ways is a precursor to what everybody feels Pandora is right now um was the largest radio player online
you know we were you know the I like to tell people is that we were the first company to have data on a billion pieces of song plays a month um you know it was the first company to reach a billion song plays in a month
Yahoo effectively got over Overture for free they valued the settlement at zero when they acquired Overture and then they got Yahoo they got Google Shares that that went 5x yeah so they bought it for free they actually got paid to take it wow and it's the only thing of value in the whole business
Yahoo not so much uh they used to Yahoo was doing something in search but they something where they allowed people to use the search result Yahoo boss they had an open AP which they well they sold access to API very inexpensively
Yahoo did the classic sley you know sued them before their IPO to you know kind of screw up their valuation
Yammer CEO David saak was particularly critical of the move uh he called on other Silicon Valley companies to take a stand against Yahoo he also vowed on Twitter that Yammer won't hire anyone who remains at Yahoo for more than 60 days after this and he's offering a $25,000 signing bonus to Yahoo employees who defect
i don't think that becoming a tr patent troll should be seen as a turnaround strategy i think it's just a horrible if that's the strategy or one of them that's bad
they're really only valuable to companies with huge legal departments like yahoo which are kind of circling the drain and you know trying to invent a new business model
and i mean that in a way is what yahoo has said isn't it well they've said we suck yeah
you need someone that's like a dictator and can be a tyrant and can pick up through sh sheer will of force and move an entire organization
that organization is incapable of releasing product
the biggest loss that Yahoo just had was losing Blake Irving
to kill your product team which is the source of your Innovation is insane to me
this sounds like a page out of the tired CEO Playbook
maybe they'll be the demand media of five years from now
everyone in the developer ecosystem is really hesitant to use even Yahoo's best developer tools now because they're afraid that they'll be shut down
people who are inevitably going to leave such a a terrible company
I think it's very hard to turn around a tech company right I mean people always mention Steve Jobs the fact that he's the only one and he was like the greatest ever I mean it shows you how hard it is right
I don't think that becoming a patent troll should be seen as a turnaround strategy I think it's just a horrible if that's the strategy or one of them that's bad
so yes I'm trying to put some and fill some engineering positions from the people who are inevitably going to leave such a a terrible company that thinks that their best option is to sue people instead of
they're really only valuable to companies with huge legal departments like Yahoo which are kind of circling the drain and you know trying to invent a new business model or to these patent trolls
it's starting to create a path which if we keep going down if Silicon Valley keeps going down this path it will result in in what you're saying which is it'll just be way too hard to innovate in in any area where there are established patents and should all the companies in Silicon Valley get together and have a patent treaty yes and just say like Yahoo Yahoo Google Apple and these mid-tier companies we we'll bring our software patents together yes put them in a bucket yes create a new organizat
any employee who leaves yaho to join Yammer the next 60 days will give a $25,000 signing bonus too wow so I'm trying to create a little bit of motivation for employees at Yahoo to reassess whether they want to work at a patent troll
if these large established tech companies with these huge patent portfolios of thousands and thousands of patents now see this as a line of business I think it's really going to crimp innovation in Silicon Valley
they're basically saying that this is an acceptable line of business right that that we're going to get a revenue line
they basically by suing Facebook on the eve of their IPO this very opportunistic type of lawsuit a Shakedown it's a Shakedown like a patent troll would
Yahoo is become a patent troll
we're a social Switzerland we want to we have a platform approach we want to work with every everyone we want to take these basic horizontal components uh the the apps that we're going to focus on are the horizontal ones the ones that everyone in the company needs um so it's stuff like profiles and identity it's stuff like uh you know uh some degree of of file sharing conversations and so on uh but we're not going to get into like departmental apps like CRM you know that's what our integration o
I think the thing to realize about chatter is it's basically an activity feed for what's happening in Salesforce right so it's it's useful for getting a record of when people change an opportunity from open to closed or change a dollar amount you see those record changes yeah but that's pretty much all it is like those those um sort of system generated messages are coming at such a fast velocity that it actually drowns out when humans want to just talk into the feed so Yammer is more about colla
there's about 300 employees at the company now wow um we have operations in the US uh Europe Australia uh sort of as our uh launching point for for Asia uh in terms of users we have over 4 million corporate users which um it's hard to kind of Benchmark these things I know that compared to Facebook that doesn't sound like a lot but in the Enterprise these are paying users well so about uh 20% of them are are paid seats so um so it's about over 4 million corporate users uh almost 20% of them are a
we've raised $142 million total so 85 of which was this this growth round that we just did um dfj led the round with participation from kosla meritech um Capricorn and then all of our previous investors participated so um CRV Founders fund uh emergence Social Capital uh and usvp
it took salesforce.com uh about uh 12 years to get to 3 million users and it took us about 3 years to get 3 million users now we're kind of well past that and that's because this is so much more viral it's designed as a social network whereas Salesforce was designed as contact management CRM
if they were liquidation I mean wasn't this an incredibly Savvy move on aol's part to just get a billion dollar generation
I think Yahoo is in liquidation mode and frankly unfortunately I think
I really like it so I this is a big deal for Dropbox I mean Dropbox has to start thinking about application layer functionality on top of just sharing files
I sometimes I feel like they're doing it just to get position to be acquired by a company that may do collaboration software uh in Redmond or in Mountain View
I mean this is a great company and that's why they're raised 85 million and these are the these are the Microsoft Office collaboration and sap and Salesforce replacers like this is Next Generation
I think we're seeing that all these people are going to head in the same direction which is this is going to be the new sap new office
Yammer users will now be able to see the contents of folders they share with other people on the service and they'll also be able to collaborate on office documents live through Yammer
Yahoo got a great deal right Yahoo got this incredible asset that was growing very quickly
when I was a yahoo we could test things in a number of hours
I was eight years ago who in London then in sunnyvale led the rollout of the homepage my yahoo globally
I would Yahoo it's distracting it's too big I think he's going to want to buy small companies with big impact
I would take 20 Marissa hours to 100 Scott whatever his name was Scott Thompson hours right so for every hour Marissa works that's about a hundred hours of Scott Thompson's nonsense
I couldn't agree more and uh I'm actually buying the stock now and I just also think it's great that there's another you know woman a female taking such a high-profile role and even just talking to engineers in the valley today it's just like yaho now has a buzz where they might want to consider working there
I do think CH is probably about 3 four five years of technological debt just getting some of these products to you know survive is going to be hard
all she needs to do is do one single deal like Google did with YouTube and she's turned it around that's one of the great things here if she buys five companies a year 10 companies a year and she can keep that job for three years she'll have bought 15 to 30 companies only one of them has to work and she's got the Firepower to do it if she's smart and she is she'll do that she'll use the ammunition to buy teams and power them and then pour a ton of traffic into them she's going to I my prediction
I think a product person would have done better with AOL rather than a salesperson he's done a great job on the sales front but what product are we all in love with from AOL in the last three four five years okay any exactly none
Marissa is in charge of Yahoo
Yahoo bought Overture and Ink to me and like seven other companies in the search space to try and compete with Google
Yahoo was losing to Google and so internal morale horrible ability to attract people horrible through those years and in fact search was such a small part of what they did
Yahoo has been been around since 1996 I think so 16 years into uh the company's existence and we're still having New York Times articles about what's Yahoo going to be when it grows up there's never actually been a clear statement in the entire 16 years but that's exactly the problem in my mind
there are these great properties from Yahoo sports to Yahoo finance to OMG they're the market leader in video outside of you know not as a YouTube platform but because they have the eyeballs and mail and none of those are geek products
I struggle to believe that there will be a ma Mass attraction of the best talent in Silicon Valley towards Yahoo just because Marissa is in charge and so even if Engineers love the fact that a geek's in charge I think for shareholder value uh investors love someone who can drive revenue and profitable growth
prior to Lloyd Brawn kind of came in when Yahoo decided to invest in the media business so the Yahoo you know the news. Yahoo sports. Yahoo finance Etc um prior to that those businesses that business unit was running at a 90 plus perc margin right there was it was literally they were taking they had Cheapo licensing deals for uh you know commodity content from the AP whatever um they were putting on these shitty pages
we're number one in all these categories despite ourselves
the problem with working at Yahoo is that anybody who any smart people I knew thought I was an idiot and any you know everybody else thought I was tech support
when I was at Yahoo for me it was all about buying companies that were about Dynamic creative optimization
I was seeing ads on the front page of Yahoo that were trying to sell me Dove soap well I use soap but I'm not the soap buyer in that household so that was a bad experience for both me and Dove
that was one of the things that worried me about Yahoo okay uh and maybe it's different now because Marissa is a younger CEO
I think it's actually an interesting company I think that it has a lot of the element of the Unknown about it the TBD yeah that they only just opened to the public and gave out an Android app and an iPad app like a week ago
they have 20 million uniques $ 1.5 billion valuation it's not it's not worth more than Pinterest is worth 300 400 million right now God's honest truth $10 per unique per month right it's $200 million company
Pinterest is a house of cards because they're so overvalued
if I was her I'd build a platform that get other people to build on top of it and create a community
why don't they make flicker free you know like I just got a renewal for my $50 flicker why don't they just make flicker super is it free
if you take a look at Google they've got Google cow Google mail and Google contacts which which I've told Google many times times that they're three separate programs and they don't connect and it's a problem
when I see someone with the Yahoo email address you think loser I'm not going to say loser but I'm thinking dated just a little bit sort of behind the curve
Yahoo mail is number one okay Yahoo home page number two that was my point Yahoo sports news and finance would be probably the three four and five
I think that's a that's a serious dent in her ability to do something gamechanging um in terms of buying a really good product leader
Marissa is a contemporary of a lot of these people like Mark pinkis um or danis Crowley I think some of them might see it as like failure in a way to sell to her While others might think it's awesome to join her team but it's going to be you know it's not like Steve Jobs buying your company where like oh Steve Jobs bought my company like he's my hero it's like well Marissa was this Google employee who's now in charge of this I don't want to sell to her that would feel like defeat to me
Yeah, I've been a believer in Marissa. And to be clear, like, Marissa can be difficult sometimes, I bumped heads with her, I'm a friend of hers. Andů You know, she can be really tough, but I also think, one other thing, she was known for, rightly, at Google, was, that she invested in her people, in her team, more than anybody [did]. She would take her young product managers, tour them around the world, so they can understand, how Koreans use technology, and what was going on in Israel and Russia
I think a lot of the dynamic, awesome, entrepreneurial people left that company long time ago. And I think Marissa has the ability get those people back there.
They're not MySpace. Users are still like them. Users still use them as a homepage. Their email product is awesome. It might be better than Gmail. They have a leg up in media, and audience, and that kind of stuff.
That's the hard job, man. ... Because they've been going nowhere for so long. Just multiple CEOs.
I bought the day after she took the job.
Marissa knows, that, at Yahoo, she's gotta bring the mojo back. ... I think she understands that mojo drive so much of this, and she has such a huge audience, that I'm actually a believer. I own the stock. I'm long on that stock.
Yahoo did a very very very good thing to uh to get her um to to run the company
they they fing it now with Marissa heading yah
hugest blunder in the history of Silicon Valley was Yahoo putting Google as their search result instead of building their own
you know even you know again going back to Yahoo or anyone who's going to acquire these things you they can't buy a lot of these tiny businesses because they need businesses that move the needle like a hundred million Marissa is talking about a 100 million people or hundred million dollars most of these mobile companies for example many of which are in these groups are not going to get to that and so even if they're laudable interesting things they're just not going to get to the kind of scale t
I think it's probably smart to cut back it's gotten a little fro the other word is frothy I hate to use that too but I think it's you know it's I think there was talking about what Dave was just talking about it was you have to really start to focus
they're getting closer to what we've always done which is you know bring in more mentors to actually be Hands-On and help uh kind of rightsizing investment and and maybe scaling back a little to uh you know be focused on on the companies a bit more
why combinator is like Cookie Cutter they're just churning them out at a factory and they wanted a more personalized experience
people are conscious of it and you know I think they they're aware that uh you know with the new mobile strategy that that perhaps there you know is an exit for them down the road through Yahoo um you I think it's still on people's Radars
it's good for Yahoo because they haven't had sort of this exciting CEO kind of character in a while they've had a lot of so that's I ass it's good it's just it can't be a Marissa story it's got to be a Yahoo story eventually
they've got very few choices of how to really you know truly move the needle besides the pr which she's very good at uh you know that's going to get her so far when if she doesn't move the needle and revenue in significant ways doesn't matter
they don't have any mobile strategy to speak of at this moment they're buying stuff but for the most part Yahoo's been way out of the mobile game
I think that you know I think that she's working on a lot of tech things actually um you know they just have to redo the homepage it's you know it's the front page of where everything comes in it's critically important it's where most of their finances are generated off of that home page ad um so they really do have to make it look good and make it an attractive place now a lot of people you go through their through Yahoo mail and things like that and so they have to make it somewhat compelling
what do I think yeah I mean she seems to be very very uh obsessed with the homepage so why is she obsessed with it let's start with that I don't think she's obsessed with it I think she's got to CH I mean it has to change it looks like it's from 1943 at this point um you know it's kind of I mean who's using portals kind of thing and so it really does have kind of an older old old web kind of look um and I think they have to they're changing it to make it more Mobil uh attractive as you can see w
Yahoo looks like it's got a new homepage that's set to debut they're using touchscreen tiles so it looks like it can be consumed very easily on mobile looks like according to Cara's description no advertising at the top part of the screen um sources have said that ads could be integrated into the tiled modules and that the redesign is being iterated under the code name project home run
you know a few years ago um we had uh folks like Greg Khan that was at at Yahoo part of brick house showing up all the time you know I'd say three or four years years ago um and they've lost so many people that a lot of the people that we used to you know really have coming in aren't there anymore so' be interesting to see what they do as they uh enter the new phase
I think it's also like a graveyard well yeah this netvibes and there's page flakes and there was my yahoo... but i think the spin she's putting on it is we're just going to automatically figure out what you like... i think it's actually a good CEO market fit but i think that she's a
it's gonna get there and they young was pretty close already so she's just refining the assets they already have you know it's hard as we've said this is a pendulum has swung free yahoo and this is another graveyard for large media companies however back to your argument about execution today nobody's executed very well on it
it's interesting everybody knew that content was the right direction for Yahoo and so when they got rid of rasa what Marissa everybody was like wait a second if contents the right direction then why Marissa inst over Ross right because they're both equally qualified to do the job... this actually feels like a good middle ground which is we're going to make yahoo a destination for content which is what it is already and we're going to make the content more customized and more pinterest like
personalized content well automatically personal and that's another that's another potential graveyard except you know it's businesses have fallen down that trap
they should get rid of the brand wallet in the Yahoo keep making yahoo better and better
first of all this is great Yahoo buying is is like it's the the time is long overdue these companies are sitting on tens of billions of dollars cash in some case is and they're not acquiring company so can hats off to you Marissa acquire more you need to acquire more
yahoo has acquired another company snip dot it I think that's the second acquisition for Marissa and it looks like a good one
looking at Marissa Mayer who's an active Twitter user she's following 300 people on Twitter and not a single one of them is uh among this group of 500 leading mobile developers so if Mobile's the future uh it seems that at least on that platform that's not where she's engaging
I liked her I do like them admitting they're a Content company because I always tell the story... they've always always as G was sort of alluding to before all these tech companies are like they begrudgingly want to be in the content business.
I think everybody's just happy that there's someone at the helm who people feel like that they get the consumer internet and they get technology and they get products... everybody again everybody wants Yahoo to win... it's pretty Universal the support that Marissa has... she's got a pretty good Runway... she's earned a lot of credibility... people are going to give her the runway.
I think she's working on all the right things... I believe that Silicon Valley and people who are watching want Yahoo to win... they believe in Marissa and they believe in Yahoo and they just want it all to work out.
why they LED without the keyboard makes no sense to me Blackberry is synonymous with keyboard so they went with the non-keyboard version so stupid just terrible idea go with the keyboard first what they really need to do is open source their operating system and make it available for free to everybody because they two other I mean I I I view that Blackberry is not in competition with iPhone I think they're in competition with these two which is Windows and Android
I did a some analysis in little bird of the Blackberry developer channels audience and uh found that of the the top 500 most influential mobile developers on Twitter only 10% are following uh the Blackberry Dev account and it's not a particularly influential uh 10% uh even in that spectrum and more influential in that Community are are startups like flurry and test flight and Portland's Urban Airship all have more uh cache amongst top mobile developers than the Blackberry developer channel does
I think this Market's moving so fast and it's hard to come back after so much bad news yeah and I think you know without sort of skipping ahead to Yahoo I think it's it's a great example of when you lead with um when you lead with a Super Bowl commercial and Aisa Alicia Keys yeah um rather than product exceptionalism as you say and also you know getting people on your team who actually have reputations for building great products yeah which is not alici sha Keys despite how awesome she is yeah I
we gonna see like Facebook or yah such a different it's such a different DNA from a technology company and I I I mean I look at it and you know Netflix specifically has been experimenting in content and production um not not original production like they're doing with House of Cards but they've been experimenting with this for 10 years so I I think the idea of a you know when you're building a technology especially a platform company day in and
What an amazing company, this has been, right?
And, importantly, they still have their founder-CEO visionary, right? He's like running it.
I mean, the e-commerce is still only eight percent of commerce. It's shockingly low. That number is going to go to thirty or forty.
I tend to think they are both great companies. And Amazon, I tend to think, will eat more out of offline commerce, than it will Google. Do you know what I mean? Like, that's where I wouldů If Iů If you are going to go long Amazon, you're going to short BestBuy.
I think, their commerce position is just, you know, very very strong. uh... And it might be really interesting leverage into, like,ů They are ableů This is really fascinating, because, like, they're able to use that, to subsidize, you know, the Kindles and everything else.
Yahoo actually continues to make money ... still they have what 700 million people somehow using the services so take that into consideration as well right it's not the same situation it's not like they're just bleeding money um left and right they have a problem with with Focus
Yahoo is in need of Desperate Measures at least from a company culture perspective
you go in and there's 10 11,000 people working on how many unique projects yep it's 500
the problems that Yahoo faces right now are the things you need to solve you need to have Clarity you need to make people feel like the work that they're doing actually matters and it's going somewhere
showing up as she did and basically looking out her window of the corner office and looking at the parking lot in the morning and see huh slow to fill up it's quick to to dissipate in the evening and looking at the VPN logs for remote workers it's a very shallow way of evaluating the problems your organization have because I Yahoo has 11,000 employees or something like that right right um Facebook has like a third of that right and the same Rue but even if you look at those 11,000 I don't believ
we keep get bailed out by mors laal now is at the point where it's not even a conversation anymore we can keep on one database I'm almost willing to bet forever right
we ran zero Financial Risk we kept all our Consulting customers um such that if Bas cam had flunked out we would have wasted 6 months of our spare time big effing deal who cares
our initial goal was can we get something that people will pay us $4,000 a month can we get enough customers that they'll pay us $4,000 a month aggregate in aggregate total right then we'd be like hey this is doing pretty well 50 Grand a year
I would say that it's not beyond the realm of possibility that that Marissa could acquire a company like Tumblr and and leave it as a standalone business um you you know we know that's not and I know from my own personal experience that that's not the the way they've done in the past um but I would you know if if past if precedent is is is the right predictor then you're you're probably right
I don't think Yahoo can say that historically and neither can Google Google's for killing stuff
what I do think is going to happen this position is I think Marissa is going to get out bid again right because she lost Yelp and she lost other deals um although maybe this time she'll hold her ground and just not blink but well she CEO this time that's true too
my feeling on this is yeah it's great for Yahoo Tumblr I'm not so sure Yahoo is a great home for them I think it's an okay place I mean it's a great seem like a fit well here's the thing they could Tumblr is just starting monetization so obviously monetization Yahoo can help with I don't think Yahoo can help with like any kind of cool factor or anything like that but um they do have a huge ad sales force and they can start selling into it all that kind of great stuff
Yahoo has a long history of real content um probably more so than any other Silicon Valley company you know they had had groups uh you know didn't they buy back then uh um know a bunch of kind of website Builders back in 2000
well don't they do that already um well like as a parent 15 year olds is too late to talk about yeah
I think it's great I think it's great for both um I think that uh well I think I think it's great because Yahoo one of the things that Yahoo does very well is um because it's entire uh not entire almost its entire business runs off the conversion of people off of uh its homepage and uh you know they run as they often talk about um custom homepages obviously for every single user and they're constantly moving those things through um and they do have the ability to surface if they if they implemen
I mean Yahoo mail is the anchor of Yahoo absolutely
my colleague Tony Schneider uh oost which became became yah yah that's been probably one of the most Acquisitions
I think Yahoo has been a smart acquirer they have flick delicious good good Acquisitions
I think it's actually a very unobtrusive way to do advertising um perhaps you know they also helped think Yahoo's seing some declining overall usage helps the numbers there
I really like native advertising like the idea of something where the ad looks just like the thing that you actually want to get right that's what's beautiful
I think in the past the priorities have changed yeah I'm sure they went into each of those with the right intentions and in some cases grew them hugely beyond what they were
they've never been good at Community I mean flicker after it got bought delicious after it got bought it's cool for a few years Geo cities yeah but they wound up killing those things they just have never had in their DNA a really good job at building Community
they have not Yahoo has not stood for user generated content at ever well to be fair they had flicker delicious upcoming okay right yeah they just had they bought some of those assets and screwed them up
I think you Who's acting smarter than they have in the past if they're smart they won't try to push any advertising they would I would have if I were them I would remove the current advertising and just let it grow as a as a user product
I think it's tough um I mean leadership changes priorities change cost change um these things can all affect the future of a acquired product
Marissa is a unique executive I mean you respect Marissa yes so she's unique so maybe she wound she think you think that we're reached a we've reached a new moment in entrepreneurship
you get a certain amount of time for them not to [ __ ] with the asset and then they eventually do
it's very impressive that Marissa was able to convince David car who's a great entrepreneur to go for it I think it speaks to her Charisma as well
it's great to see you know what the folks behind the Service uh are going to do with the new resources both corporate like under the ages of Yahoo but also the personal resources
the opportunity is much much longer than that and so they sold for too little in my opinion they could have kept going
like Tumblr getting bought for a billion dollars by Yahoo uh which many people consider a contemporary
YouTube is a great platform YouTube has a huge opportunity and it's YouTube's um game to lose
if you just do a Google search about the dark fiber they bought up and the amount of fiber they own they don't really have bandwidth costs the way that you know you setting up a web server with they have that as a fixed cost
if we're here a year from now they will absolutely be taking 30% I guarantee you that
my impression of Google and YouTube is that and all technology companies is they really don't respect content companies I don't think that they think you're all that important on an individual basis
Google and YouTube taking this position that we don't do better deals is completely false they do give better deals they just don't give them to you
people like a and Yahoo are going and using scarcity the quality of the product the distribution as a way to get high cpms and they're getting cpms that absolutely trouts what YouTube gets
I wouldn't be surprised if Facebook or Netflix or AOL or Yahoo these people come out and say we'll give you 100% of revenue for the first year or two to try to get you to leave YouTube
you'll have other options and your other options people like Yahoo Facebook Microsoft AOL and other folks maybe even Netflix or Amazon dip down to this level when those folks come into the market in the next 12 months you want to be prepared
Yahoo AOL MSN Microsoft Facebook will be competing with YouTube in the next year
and then you have Yahoo making a rebound in AOL making a Resurgence so it is possible
Google has hardened that a lot uh SSL by default uh perfect forward secrecy in ways that AOL and Yahoo still have to do or they're still C trying to catch up to
this is is very smart in in part for not just for kind of building the audiences but for the advertising perspective
video for everyone in general and and YouTube is part of that is is huge for Publishers uh particularly because that's pretty much the only inventory that's Rel sold out for everyone
everyone I spoke to had been had come from a startup that was recently acquired or had been acquired in the last year or so and they're building a tremendous amount of talent back up into Yahoo
the biggest challenge is that Yahoo doesn't actually have any search technology to be pitching you know they gave all that up as part of their deal when they signed this deal with Microsoft and so supposedly in a period of three to four months Yahoo would have to put everything back together that they used to have and it's not completely impossible that they could do it but it's a huge challenge
it was brutal for them I mean the layoffs and the cost cutting and trying to figure out what their businesses were was hard
y was still on the ascendency as one of the sole survivors with Amazon eBay
I learned more in that first year Yahoo than I had at any other year in my life
you go down the street to Yahoo and well yeah and this was in the summer of 2004 so none of those conversations actually went anywhere
if I'm a Machinima I am going to partner with Yahoo or Facebook or anybody to go heads up against Google
I think there's a good chance now I think Yahoo buys Machinima
the, the argument at Yahoo that I never really understood is, are we a tech company or are we a content company?
just getting the getting out of their own way by actually having products in the mobile space
they're not really growing very much we're talking about tiny tiny growth uh still a very profitable company but very tiny growth
they had a good earnings uh report and they even talked about having aund I think it was $100 million from Tumblr Revenue by the end of next year which did surprise me a little bit more than I more than I expected
they've revamped a lot of their existing products and made them nicer they've introduced some new verticals in the content space right like yaho Tech and things like that
she's still has time but I I I'm starting to get concerned only because it's been more than two years and there has been no new product
it seems like they had a profitable quarter now for the first time or a little bit of growth they've been profitable for a long time but a little bit of growth
Caris swier you know covers topics like what's that covers Yahoo really well she's actually she's actually on the board people don't realize that's how she gets all the scoop she's actually literally a board member
even when you look at their Acquisitions it seems like they're making long-term bets uh there are smart people that she's keeping there that are retaining
she has a multi-billion dollar company and she's made I think incredible strides forward
I see incredibly brilliant engineers and designers who could work at any number of companies actually saying I would work for Marissa I would work for Marissa
I think the job at Yahoo um you know a company the size and scale of Yahoo and Industry that's shifting this quickly frankly I think she took on an unsolved problem some people might say unsolvable
I'm Jerry Yang let me explain to you how to create a hierarchical directory for you to get through the web more efficiently and it's like have you heard of search engines
the the tricky thing about having too high of a valuation is just the risk of downside right and so next round if you have a Down Round if you can't meet the Milestones if it's just it can be a little bit risky that's all so I've seen that happen a lot with why combinat companies of late
I think it's that the YC partners are really excellent at product help yeah for sure they really great product advisers and they're you can get a really significant valuation bump with YC
Yahoo made the first step, so they're going to do the first over-the-top game for the National Football League. And I think it's I think it's this week. It's either this week or next week. Um, and that's that's a big step.
they never really uh made video work and they gave up they did Community they did Kitty cork they did SNL but you never heard what they learned from that and then iterated on it
display advertisers turn into have turned into video advertisers they could have very easily crushed it on the video front they didn't focus enough that's my belief
there was no product Cadence at Yahoo we never saw a 2.0 out of any of these products it was always one and done
the biggest issue was she never made it clear what their business was and bet on one piece of it you bought Tumblr so you were and you have the business she should have done that and then divested the other businesses like sell the display networks maybe and just become a 100% content
Yahoo is a disaster Marissa did a great job for the first two years she bought a bunch of companies I think that was smart get a bunch of new talent in there she made it livable there she gave everybody iPhone she gave everybody food great she caught up to the rest of the valley um but two things became clear in the second half one she wasn't able to hold on to Talent
yahoo is this this crazy old thing that sits on top of this giant wave of Internet advertising that may come get big and then goplay advertising once once display advertising itself is toxic you have ad blockers all these things going on Yahoo is the single biggest like benefactor of that and they're going to write it down
if it's unsavable I think that's why because it requ someone to come in and answer this question and I think to a very large degree the only person who can answer this question is Jerry Yang he's got to come back and he's got to answer this question what is Yahoo in 2015 2016 2017
she has not solved the very simple question of what is Yahoo what is it still nobody knows what Yahoo is
I think the problem was that she said we're going to be for maven's mobile video social and then layer that on top of the four existing businesses so you have seven strategies that you're trying to execute concurrently maybe five or six too many
she didn't spend enough she made a lot of small little Acquisitions that nobody gives a crap about some Su Le or suif fire or whatever those things didn't go anywhere so she should have spent more and then they go well she spent too much so it's you know she can't win
the one of the charts that jumps out of that that shareholder thing is the Instagram versus um Tumblr thing and how one is grown and one was they're both billion dollar Acquisitions where one is effectively because of Yahoo's share price worth zero or less than zero and the other one is worth arguably 35 billion within Facebook right so definitely the tale of two Acquisitions there
I really think she she got in there and she's like done the best she can do I don't think you could you know say she hasn't tried right but uh she's made a lot of gambles
they bought Tumblr that's not nothing I mean that's a pretty big deal but it hasn't gone that was really smart it hasn't gone anywhere really it hasn't grown or I mean it certainly hasn't impacted their their bottom line it's no inst St yes put it that way
you can't turn around a thing with that same name... you're standing in a field trying to catch an a falling airplane with a baseball glove there's a really really small chance you can do it... it's a mess... I think it's unsavable as it is
I think more than anything else Marissa she has a really bad messaging problem... she's done a lot more than people give her credit for... she's got to get this messaging under control like immediately... it's definitely in like messaging death spiral mode right now... her head's going to be on a pike very soon if she does not get this thing under control
I think the biggest problem with Yahoo is they didn't release any products for like two years when Marissa first took over she was releasing a ton of new products they had yahoo screen they had yahoo weather they had this yahoo news digest they signed katie couric they signed david pogue I don't think those were particularly great signings honestly I don't think those people were are the types of talent that Yahoo needed but at least it was something I got people talking got people interested...
Marissa is a failure now
we had launched Yahoo radio and when Corp dev was like wait we can buy this company and we can basically set Yahoo back
I think too to change the momentum of any if you want to take like the analogy of a boat right it's huge in you if they can move in different directions especially when it has a certain type of momentum the
the problem with any one such question is it it's an experiment you can only run once but you don't get to do an a/b test of max runs Yahoo versus not Max and you know let's see it right it just doesn't work that way you see you commit and you go and I you have to you have to own it whatever decision is having said that I you know after 30 years of doing this stuff I think myself a little bit of a product guy and my recurrent mantra was yahoo mail it's the one thing that I use and my mom uses an
if the mission was to return shareholder value after the horrific not selling Yahoo for forty five billion to Microsoft she really did complete the mission of returning a massive amount of shareholder value she landed the plane she certainly landed the plane
when I joined actually I I was in for it a lot of really interesting lessons some of which are not at all what I bargained for things like activist shareholders and hedging international currency exposure but I learned more than I could possibly bargain for so I enjoyed that one too
to me Yahoo represents kind of the very first generation or the 0th generation of the web
Yahoo was already a thing yeah I was kind of the the dinosaur slash predecessor to almost everything yeah the directory it is the directory was before the search was a thing before anything really was you know what's hot what's new the new knowledge was the greatest part of Yahoo
Yahoo was an interesting case I thought so I'm old enough to remember when internet went to being the web or be to containing the weapon so I was at the U of I when Andreessen launched mosaic so I was on the very campus where the web went from being no images to basically being all about porn yeah and that sort of blew my mind
Marisa as big mistake according to everybody universally here was she didn't do a quick efficient layoff at Yahoo and that's why they were never able to turn it around
we were unable to build the mobile app from Flickr why which is crazy because yes people work on because of office politics because one guy at Yahoo owned mobile uh and so we were unable to build the product
I think I was um I was lunching with him on behalf of Yahoo Corp dev oh right yeah because my my company had been acquired by Yahoo and they were very interested in acquiring the Facebook
my company had been acquired by Yahoo
she started working on a site called Flickr which previously before that was a game and that got sold to Yahoo for around 25 or 30 million bucks and at the time it was reported that Yahoo had overpaid and it was the most ridiculous purchase
Microsoft or Yahoo or anybody else is gonna just trash this thing
either Microsoft or Yahoo is gonna offer a billion dollars for Facebook
yahoo reported their quarterly earnings and the stock went down and they refused to change the equity that they were offering so the value of the equity was now something like 850 million right and Facebook went to them and said hey you gotta increase the equity to make up for the difference and Terry Semel said absolutely not the deal is the deal and Mark said that's it we're done and never look back
Yahoo was paying him like 300 million dollars or something like that to to make Yahoo the default search engine on Firefox
Google has hardened that a lot. SSL by default, perfect forward secrecy in ways that AOL and Yahoo still have to do, or they're still trying to catch up to.
