there would be no way for Apple to ditch Google search
and oh terrible name because you know Google's just gonna sue you over that
if Google's got all this Google analytics data flowing in and they got Google Fiber and they've got all this stuff nothing segregates all those things from going into one big giant pool to figure out this is the best of the stuff that's out there
does it make sense that if you are a search engine that you should be not favoring your own search results because that's stupid that's like saying it's unfair that the New York Times favors its own sports section right but whether or not you should be putting links into your own destination content right which it would be your YouTube or whatever that sort of stuff and and are there things that are going on there and but it really is that closed loop thing that I think was the bigger issue
what they should have spent their time on was looking at whether or not Google has too much of a closed loop right is it an unfair advantage that you have a service that can gather up all this data that in turn helps them understand which content on the web really should rank better in a way that somebody who doesn't give way a lot of other the stuff or doesn't have all these products and services can do
they spent and basically wasted all the time and energy that they had had chasing down whether or not Google was being unfair to its competing search engines as if that was what you were going to spend your political capital on
the antitrust investigation agencies and the government agencies and everything that looked into Google is so incredibly low because I find them incredibly stupid
if they're going to deal with a large news publisher and they're having issues getting the news Publishers content into Google News they're probably going to talk to them they may set up some some way to deal with it because they want that kind of content
they do by the way in search have partnersh ship and special deals and all that sort of stuff that you want to talk about they do have all that stuff
I think they address with it well in the sense that by and large web search really doesn't try to play these favorites but I don't think they really understand to the degree that I think people are starting to shift to feel like yeah you're just going to do whatever you want for yourselves
I think they deal with it poorly because I don't think that they tend to address the conflict that they have to begin with
one of the challenges that they've had with YouTube is they have something that is both a search engine people do turn to it and search for information on it and it's also a Content destination and Google historically its roots were we are a search engine that outward points to on other content destinations so our conflicts between our our pointing to the best uh and trying to have the best stuff were were not an issue but now they want to have the best stuff they want to be a Content destinatio
uh I think it's smart
in fact Google took about two years to catch up with that
and oh terrible name because you know Google's just gonna sue you over that
Chrome was a good example of that when they launched their browser it was like well we're going to do this because we want to raise up the rest of the browser industry
I think it's probably a combination of both um you know they do seem to do these kind of crazy things but when they go into an area and they start doing things like fiber then that puts pressure on the existing players to say well maybe we need to step up or do something
Google has snatched up Titan Aerospace
when you go to secure is they're just stripping out the Search terms
um I think Google's future is just fine I I think that it's really easy to first of all get lost between the percentage of traffic that you're receiving from different sources and Overlook the sheer volume of traffic that you're receiving right so Gizmodo probably has not seen its Google traffic drop and in fact most Publishers when you start to get into it they talk about how socials I like outweighing go you know search or whatever when you start to talk to them they don't say that that search
it's not like Google Now where it's doing as much of the predictions that that Google Now can do
the danger is that if it stumbles I think people will react to that much more badly than they would if Google stumbled
if you have a long time relationship with your search engine like Google and it and it doesn't come back to you um sometimes you may want to blame yourself
Google Now is one of those things that I went wow this is this is very transformative
Google last year rewrote their entire search engine so you know even if they still had it it's just become outdated
when you search at Yahoo by and large you're really just getting being search results they're dressed up a little bit here and there there other stuff that's injected but it's really being
the biggest challenge is that Yahoo doesn't actually have any search technology to be pitching you know they gave all that up as part of their deal when they signed this deal with Microsoft and so supposedly in a period of three to four months Yahoo would have to put everything back together that they used to have and it's not completely impossible that they could do it but it's a huge challenge
I think it's smart um I was watching The Madman Premiere and in you know they do the commercials and one of the commercials was one of these things to say hey meet a YouTube star or whatever which I thought was an effective placement and you know it there really is this huge audience that turn to YouTube and I watch my own kids and they don't make a difference between I want to watch a TV show tonight or I'm GNA watch what's on YouTube tonight they'll they they tune into these shows they love th
I suspect it it's closed because it's apple and apple like to do things very carefully and only let stuff work the way that they want to do it and possibly only let things work the way they wanted to do it if there's a good business Revenue model behind it as well
if and if Apple were smart what they would do is they would roll out series search right so you would go to Safari you would do a search and your search results would come back from Siri where they would do the the primary stuff that they do already and if you didn't get the answers then you would get your answers that would come back from siries orch powered by Bing or whatever um but the danger is that if it stumbles I think people will react to that much more badly than they would if Google s
there would be no way for Apple to ditch Google search
I love the video previews that's my favorite is that they cash like these video previews so when if you want to see what's actually in the video you just hover over it and it plays like the first X number and it does it across like AOL and YouTube and any other service
they've had other things too like if you wanted to find images by size for your desktop or whatever pretty nice and in fact Google took about two years to catch up with that
the faircast thing that they were doing which was to try to predict what's going to on with future flights I always thought was very good although it's become hit and miss when I use it now
Microsoft has a 10-year license on all that technology
Yahoo did a deal with Microsoft and gave up all their search technology so when you search at Yahoo by and large you're really just getting being search results they're dressed up a little bit here and there there other stuff that's injected but it's really being
Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo, Yahoo didn't want to be bought
when Microsoft decided they wanted to get build search technology it was a yearslong process
the biggest challenge is that Yahoo doesn't actually have any search technology to be pitching you know they gave all that up as part of their deal when they signed this deal with Microsoft and so supposedly in a period of three to four months Yahoo would have to put everything back together that they used to have and it's not completely impossible that they could do it but it's a huge challenge
