if you look at Larry Ellison at Oracle he tried to sell all his stock he tried to get rid of his company and no one would buy it from him and then all of a sudden he's like damn I'm second richest man in the world
all of them didn't worry about revenue for a long time well Google Yahoo um other folks in their YouTube none of these guys worried about making making a dollar at first
if YouTube or Facebook or Twitter wanted to maximize Revenue they could put up trailers and roadblocks and instantly have tons of Revenue
if you look at the biggest guys on the web space um all of them didn't worry about revenue for a long time well Google Yahoo um other folks in their YouTube none of these guys worried about making making a dollar at first and what they worried about is making audience
the only company that really would want to do that and in is Yahoo with their delicious acquisition uh flicker Community Based uh images which is also an incredible search Project product it's probably the best image search available out there delicious the best sort of social search product out there uh but they couldn't put it together and also Yahoo had answers right
a lot of people though don't have this problem with figuring out a business model like if you're Microsoft or Salesforce actually success equals dollar success but they really concentrated on selling marketing
Google doesn't want to get into content and Google doesn't want to do community building it's not their speciality
doing a search product uh against something Google was doing kind of hard but if you gave something someone if you gave people something completely different and something that Google could not follow you which is they have no desire to go into the whole user generated content space that worked for us
in the case of Google they launched the local zip code level local news now I wouldn't write those guys off but you know they did that the day after my birthday which was great I like thanks guys um but it turns out that that really hasn't been a huge Focus for us because they have they've really taken the Google News audience and given them a local piece as opposed to going after the greater audience with local news
Google's a search based news product we decided to be more of a directory based news product where we'd have in our case 300,000 different news Pages based on location and and topic
we came out a topics with a with a uh with a news product right after Google had come up with our Google News product and so we clearly couldn't compete Square on with Google um in in the news space with an aggregated news product without something else what we did was categorization
if you look at Salesforce they put way way more money into marketing to be very very unprofitable for a long time to become the number one player in the market
but there are people who are Salesforce right Salesforce has a lot less Buzz it's a publicly traded company worth billions of dollars and I think that they've done very very well even though I don't hear much about them anymore even though you know that guy on top keeps talking about Tibet
if YouTube or Facebook or Twitter wanted to maximize Revenue they could put up trailers and roadblocks and instantly have tons of Revenue
you can take a long approach like Twitter has taken
it could become easily a default platform if they were able to get it to the people who are in a in a different place than the Twitter audience is now
I think it does have something sustainable it's a communication medium
I mean unless you're Twitter and you can just go on forever without very large amount of money in the bank and you know it's okay that's the other strategy too right just raise an insane amount of capital
if you look at Google there were several times where Google came close to getting acquired that you find out in the buy and buy and they tried to sell for like a lot less than they could have gotten just because they were like in 2000 it sucked and they couldn't they wouldn't they didn't quite get what they wanted and they sort of built Market chair built Market chair and then they stole the over model and Bam they're in business life is good
if you look at the biggest guys on the web space um all of them didn't worry about revenue for a long time well Google Yahoo um other folks in their YouTube none of these guys worried about making making a dollar at first and what they worried about is making audience
