No person- or entity-level identity check is on record for this company. A name match is not one.
The inclusion bar: two or more independent sourced evidence families. This profile is reachable but not in the ranked index. It is a statement about how much evidence we hold, and about nothing else.
We have not established fit. That is not a soft no and not a soft yes — it is unknown, and it is never counted as a qualified prospect.
Five evidence lanes (activity, capital, infra, hiring, ecosystem) as within-cohort percentiles, combined with evidence-breadth weights over the 60-company baseline cohort. The ± band widens with missing lanes — it measures what the score stands on. Scores publish at 2+ evidence lanes; this company's tape carries 1 (17 signals/60d), so no number is claimed.
↗ Strongest signal: funding_magnitude (7% of the score).
↓ Scored on 1 of 4 components — funding_recency, adoption, developer had no computable metric.
The skeptic's read what this company has said, judged against what happened
Unproven ≠ false — it means the deadline or the evidence hasn't arrived. Nothing here is editorial: every count is a ledger row you can open on the Proof page.
No single number decides. Layers can disagree — that's the point. New to this? →
the ibm mainframe has lasted 65 years why it was vertically integrated we're a little less right now in the sense we don't go all the way to dirt in the 60s we went all the way to dirt meaning we found sand we made our own wafers we built our own fabs we built our own chips every single thing out to the metal that surrounded the machine what that avoided was any ip leakage but it allowed us to keep the profit of the complete stack in the company today the only piece we don't do is the actual fab
We had Watson. It was great. Uh we tried to read every it wasn't great. We tried to read every paper that was published in medicine. It was 40 million papers.
Google has a few prototypes. IBM has a little cloud.
when you talk to Google or IBM or Microsoft and ask them why why are you spending hundreds of millions a year on this, they say, well, someday there might be something that comes out of it. That's not a great business to me.
when you talk to Google or IBM or Microsoft and ask them, why are you spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on this? They say, well, someday there might be something that comes out of it. That's not a great business to me.
And the consumer market, I mean, we're pre-mobile, right? So like pre-mobile, the consumer market, pre-internet, yeah, is big, but like it's nowhere near IBM's market and the enterprise market.
You had Oracle out there. Remember, there were still mainframes and mini computers. Those things were enterprise-ready. IBM had product still.
Easy. Because that's where IBM could squish us like a bug.
I pick up the Wall Street Journal and I read that IBM's divorcing us.
we tried to sell them windows and they were resisting
it was the price of staying involved with IBM and it was convoluted
we still suspected OS two could be the winner because it came from IBM
They decided they wanted to build something that was sort of their operating system and sort of not.
IBM, we used to say we had to hang on to IBM that if we ever let go, they might trample us. We called them the bear and, you know, call this riding the bear.
If you looked at the enterprise, the enterprise was still IBM.
There was IBM, man. IBM was still the sun, the moon, and the stars. That didn't change.
IBM sort of thought, oh, we've got some protection from Microsoft kind of disintermediating us from all the developers and all the potential customers because targeting our BIOS is going to be important and unreplicatable.
They were selling a lot of computers and making profit also. They would have been making more profit than we were at the time, just the way pricing worked.
In the old world, IBM would have accrued that sort of platform benefit.
IBM sold a ton of IBM PCs and DOS was the operating system.
With IBM, Steve had overestimated his power and he knew it.
The fact that Steve didn't show up, it says the IBM executives read the no-show as a lack of commitment to the relationship. The deal was effectively dead.
A month later, Steve pulls yet another rabbit out of his hat announcing a new higher margin IBM deal. They are now going to give him another $30 million. But this deal doesn't ever happen.
we're also using IBM for storage
i can almost bet it'll be more reliable than anything ibm puts out there
it surprises me that ibm didn't move faster to become perceived as the cloud company it really surprises me
they're probably providing system integration they're probably providing a level of service maybe even customer support you know it's a single throat to choke and it's probably a layer of management services ibm owns a bunch of network management platform tools so i don't think there are a million options for someone like panasonic in the cloud
he's going up against microsoft google and ibm and grouping them and they're not even coming close
Yahoo, Google, IBM, Microsoft, every big company. It takes forever to make decisions. They have tons of business development people. ... But they can only do what? Two deals, three deals, four deals a year. ... 2% chance or a 4% chance of getting the deal.
I mean IBM released a study that 50% of some server some company server capacity is just for developing and testing new applications versus hosting them permanently
IBM's cloud and the Box Solutions went out there from quite some time and ultimately they are building some new stuff and some cool stuff but it's kind of based on their old stuff currently... they're not there yet
the real reason HP and IBM are pushing for private cloud computing is to protect their market share
they are using you know I think a fair amount of of certain companies IBM um and uh I think for networking you know I think my my employer involved quite a bit there
so yeah that's a tough question for me that's appealing you know in abstract so here's what i think i think there's a lot of companies out there today and and we saw it with ibm right um who are putting a stake in the ground and saying you know we're going for a lion's share of the cloud market and we're going to do it on the back of what we've done for the last kind of um five to ten years in client service i think what they're going to find though is that the complexity of building up uh both
if we use the standard kind of practice ... i think we'd find that um their projections are a lot lower than that
it's probably a little on the hype side and it's probably a bet that i wouldn't make currently ... it's not going to be seven billion dollars however
it's going to be difficult for the existing players uh the traditional players to catch up and i'm not just picking on hp i'm looking at oracle i'm looking at ibm i'm looking at all the huge monster traditional enterprise players
i'm looking at ibm i'm looking at all the huge monster traditional enterprise players that are out there who are looking to basically capture a part of this market now the thing is they're in trouble a bit because you can't go out and push back against cloud everybody's going to push back against you and everybody's looking for a cloud strategy from these folks however you know if you look at the way that traditionally sells software hardware and software and even you know some of the big softwa
it represents a dilemma for companies like ibm and hewlett packard and hence i see them making the move that they're doing today is how do you still manage to capture a decent percentage or hopefully not a diminishing percentage of those enterprise i.t budgets if things are moving to infrastructure as a service world
hp very much like ibm and very much like oracle and very much like a lot of the other big enterprise players out there actually finesses their way into the cloud and if they're able to be effective i'm skeptical right now
I'm having trouble understanding what it has to do with cloud computing other than you know there's a ubiquity... I you know I just think you're going to hear Cloud apply to everything that's going on in the next year or so
good good job for mybm and it's a it's a good technology to keep an eye on
I think IBM's play in that as a smart thing to do
IBM's taking advantage of that more less spin than anything else but you know this is going to be a movement over time
yes it's a PR stunt and yes it's valuable technology
technology in the cloud makes total sense but when you look at the market I mean we expected a huge explosion earlier and it hasn't happened yet so maybe there's just a delayed effect but it it is a great medium to save a whole lot of money to simplify
this is one of those killer Cloud application that no one no one wants to talk about because it's not sexy... the ability to drive this stuff out of the cloud and to basically gain access to these desktop management applications and have it come from the internet... really makes good sense
the push button aspect of this is really Spin and I think if you go into the company they're going to say you know we really provide you know ease to get to the application development environment and it's push button to get certain components up in running but as far as pushing a button you know and getting to some kind of a workable application I mean they understand that that's kind of silly
when I hear about push button application development doesn't sound like the applications are very robust
I think that the platform as a service space is right for growth I think it's the least grown areas if you compare it with platforms of service infrastructures of service and software as of service and I think these guys probably have a pretty good offering and they're going to go out and give the other bigger guys a run for the money
we have a lot of cast iron customers for example coming to us saying hey here's some changes we're seeing from ibm and we don't particularly like those changes
the biggest change that we're seeing and coming from cast iron is really due to the acquisition and the the focus and the shift in focus that ibm takes cast iron
the changes that have occurred with them being part of ibm and dell be becoming part of boomi and there's a void here there's an opportunity for this young company to really take uh take advantage of that void
so you know like IBM before there seems to be a proud path of following once you reach these moments where you find out you know what I'm just not there anymore and I don't want don't know what customers want you Retreat to software and services which IBM did successfully two decades ago and HP looks like it's it's walking down the same path
i know google was trying to get on in on the buy but they didn't and then they bought motorola mobility i think and some ibm pack yeah
there's a company called IBM that everybody thought was old school right and this company was a big Iron company right and they absolutely reinvented themselves yeah we're just going to do Consulting right we're going to be PR warehous young whatever and they're kicking butt just a cash flow machine right
we typically save a customer 20 of the first month just by looking at it
it's grown amazingly over a million paying users in less than a year it's amazing yeah and they're paying 25 bucks a month it's some of them up to 100 bucks a month
if you take adobe their creative cloud is now 300 million your business and it's all on amazon really
we don't think that's the right wisdom and we're actually seeing some very large public companies go the other way in and to get that kind of agility really
we think that for a typical case it's about 15 to 20 percent more expensive really right now a well-managed cloud over well-managed colo ignoring a lot of costs that are hard to measure um that cash basis it can be 15 to 20
IBM is a big company... I love this company of course I would love to partner with IBM so we're doing Smart Camp with them... IBM huge company successful... we have this huge partnership with IBM couldn't be prouder
IBM just announced earnings and fell 5% you know these giants like unthinkably large companies a few years ago where are they now compared a little bit Changing of the Guard but IBM has a huge Cloud business now that's getting pretty big they're nice guys and I wish them well yeah they're I mean it's a serious competition right now um they're going to spend a ton of money but you know they're looking at Consultants where the margins are coming down and Bezos lives in a world of like zero margins
we really couldn't do launch Festival without the support of IBM they've been just a critical critical partner for us
they host our launch incubator at their offices
they make so many great uh products including their cloud services and Watson if you want to put artificial intelligence and machine learning into your startup
it's probably a money losing uh proposition for IBM at the start they're just trying to help startups grow
they've got so many great products and services
I'm so proud that IBM is a partner of the launch Festival they have been relentlessly supportive of entrepreneurs
it took us I think it was four years to finally convince IBM to build a modem into a PC back then they thought it was a peripheral that only a few people would would want so why put a modem in every PC because that would add a cost of goods for every PC $300 to put a ventle or Haze modem into these things and they said you know most people don't care so we're not going to do that but finally when IBM was relaunching their their consumer PC effort they decided to build a a modem and and once IBM
Prodigy were backed by IBM and sear
we couldn't have entered the market without the partners without having IBM and apple and Comm selling our services
you mentioned IBM's Watson there they've been working for a long time you know beating all the chess Champions uh I guess deep blue is what they used to call it and that would be the perfect example of narrow just chess
IBM came to me and said hey we care about startups and I was like really why do you care about startups you're IBM like aren't you like into big companies like no no the innovation's going on there we need to be involved with startups because the little ones become so big now so fast we want to be involved with them because we don't want to miss the next Uber or Thumbtack
you were at our amazing scale conference last year as part of IBM SmartCamp they brought you to us IBM obviously having offices around the world working with startups everywhere they brought us the best startups they could find around the world world as part of their smart camp effort
we're starting to work with some IBM Watson tools as we are so that I can let nine-year-old kids have access through this coding course start playing with you know multi-billion dollar AI
it's a great idea for a business because there is a war for talent in very specific verticals getting to know the people were in they're in college and exposing them to what's going on inside of let's say IBM gives IBM a huge advantage because they've come to the building and now you know the person's normal now you know the person is smart you see them during the mentorship and say hmm does this person seem committed do they seem hard-working but it's not as arduous as an internship
we had a number of customers some of them including IBM Telstra state and federal government a couple of universities
every one of the target companies so 18t several times IBM Microsoft went to all-time highs four years after the thing
then came the IBM case the result of that was to create an independent software industry right by ending the lock-in on the IBM operating system and it created personal computers
microsoft and ibm were in fact uh disrupted by google and amazon
i think the best trade on the best trade on the internet the most obvious simple money-making trade is long microsoft google short big tech short the rest of big tech short ibm
you couldn't make an IBM, uh, compatible computer without MS DOS.
What is Facebook's issue two days ago? It was that, you know, the boogaloo movement, which is, you know, a bunch of people who believe in the militia and an impending civil war principally use Facebook and Facebook groups to organize.
I think basically that Facebook is becoming middle America and Twitter is becoming sort of the coasts. ... Facebook is basically a product of middle America, plus kind of like countries outside the United States and, you know, Twitter's about, you know, rich coastal kind of people.
One is that the Twitter product is still relatively brittle. I mean, like, Facebook has a whole suite of emoticons to say something is a crock of shit. ... And so Twitter's reactionary feedback mechanism to its algorithms is very brittle.
I don't think so. Yeah, look, I mean, it's such a slippery slope and there's too much room for interpretation. I'm just saying the obvious. But, you know, if you're a platform, you're a platform. You know, you let the things get built on top of you. Sure, you can have some rules around what can be built. But as soon as you start, you know, saying what is true and what is not true, and you become the arbiter of truth, you're no longer an agnostic platform. And I think that, you know, that that is
ibm is selling quantum computers people are selling time in the quantum computers
