The inclusion bar: two or more independent sourced evidence families. This profile is reachable but not in the ranked index. It is a statement about how much evidence we hold, and about nothing else.
We have not established fit. That is not a soft no and not a soft yes — it is unknown, and it is never counted as a qualified prospect.

The skeptic's read what this company has said, judged against what happened
Sharpest miss on record: “Lyft is likely to be acquired within the next four years.” — Lyft has remained an independent company and has not been acquired by any other firm as of mid-2026, falling short of the prediction that it would be acquired within four years.
Unproven ≠ false — it means the deadline or the evidence hasn't arrived. Nothing here is editorial: every count is a ledger row you can open on the Proof page.

if you invested in lift you couldn't do Uber and vice versa.
Capital as a weapon was Travis's big innovation at Uber among many innovations. But that was a significant advantage in beating Door Dash and Lyft and just dominating everybody because he didn't have to think about profitability in a specific region whether it was China or Las Vegas.
but interview is one thing like you know like screening is one thing like checking the insurance inspecting the car you know like they should have to go get their car inspected every 90 days they should have to go to a lift have it done or they should or lift or side car should have like a a garage where they uh subcontract the cars get checked because that's the fear here is that you know somebody is and we have this in New York with the Gypsy cabs like there're all these like dollar cabs Gypsy
and I think you know even politicians would AG that live in San Francisco would agree that they're needed to be a better solution than the cab system in San Francisco now did we need like 10 ride sharing Services probably not but that's cool yeah and um and I think I think it's you know this kind of experimentation is great uh and I agree and I'm glad to see that we're doing more experimentation
I do think you know I I think that in California there is so much um momentum around experimentation yeah you know this is a less you know we have less entrenched private transportation options and and interests than you do in say New York yeah um and that's just a reality of of California
we're very focused on peer-to-peer Transportation um and building out this consumer information infrastructure so you won't you won't be seeing uh planes and trains from us
currently 10% of those that apply are approved got it so 90% are not getting through the the initial screening process so then 10 out of 100 get in right and then of those 10 uh maybe it's about 5% um that then would would be offboard
we've also created an algorithm that will basically because we've done over a million rides we have a million points of data and you can predict based on certain patterns of feedback the likelihood of this person being safe the likelihood of this person being successful on the platform so pretty quickly um we can either coach someone or offboard someone based on that feedback
part of the reason lift has grown so fast is because this is actually more strict
black cars in the state of California there's no criminal background check so you could have infinite DUIs um and uh is that correct that's true there's no criminal background check um and then the driving record checks for taxis and limos are much less strict um so you can have many more points and and many more violations so you've set the Benchmark higher yet you're criticized more
you can't have more than two points in the last three years uh this is pretty strict
we require at least a year of of driving history um we look back on their driving record 10 years uh if they have that history
there's several thousand we haven't released an official number but there's several thousand
we've gone from about 50 to 140 people um in terms of the staff
there's a massive demand for transportation for affordable safe and and efficient transportation and and it's working
we're we're we're doing different experiments to um to correct the fact that there are times when uh demand is higher than Supply
we for um for New Year's uh we we did go above that's ref maybe that's what they were talking about and it was actually greater we doubled um but we didn't charge the the passengers for that right um so but there are peak times when you give 100% to the drivers
the average ride is about uh 122 or $13 um and you can do you know two rides an hour um if you're available for that so $25 an hour $30 an hour not uncommon in the system
we've heard many uh from many users that they're getting rid of their vehicle because of lift
we've always been after this idea that 80% of seats on our roads and highways are empty at all times and there's this massive infrastructure that could be built based on that information
we do a criminal background check uh a driving record check that are both more strict than taxis and limos
it just uh it demonstrated to other jurisdictions kind of a path forward uh for this type of new service
one regulator showed that you didn't need to compromise on safety or innovation to create a new category
California came out with uh new regulations that authorize lyt uh and other similar operations in the state of California uh I think that was a massive milestone for for the company
73% uh of our drivers are also passengers
I also think the the dynamic of the experience that the peer-to-peer experience I think with most partyy is built on the principle that people are good um and that uh people want to contribute to A system that helps them out um and I think that's paid off
on average the S the amount that is donated is greater than the suggested amount
Lyft we're focused on the pure peer-to-peer experience um so I think Uber has done a fantastic job with the professional driver um and and similar to Airbnb we're trying to to bring the peer-to-peer experience to rides
we're in uh we launched our 14th City uh we launched Dallas last week um we're we're now yeah 14 cities
we launched about lived about 14 months ago um and we we announced a couple months ago our millionth ride um and over the last uh three months we've doubled the rides per week we're doing uh from three months ago
difference between Lyft and Uber Lyft is a company people feel feel an emotional connection with Uber is a mercenary transaction look of the two I take U so I'm not putting a value judgment on that I don't want to get picked up in some douchy mustache car but people do have an emotional feeling with lift they do not have with Uber they feel like it is a cold transaction and at the end of the day that is the kind that's why you know people like apple and not Microsoft
I mean you know full disclosure sidecar released a closed beta of this service about a week ago so you know they're already okay there are they're already eyes on this space
I could see Lyft me or sidecar definitely would do it because sidecar is a low cost option so if sidecar decides to turn on this you're actually kind of competitive with sidecar then more than Uber
I said you know this is so much cheaper Lyft in sidecar I think that like this could have a meaningful impact on Uber because I can afford it and I'd rather save the money so I think a lot of people who even are able to afford to go lower
both those companies have raised tons of money it's hard for me to imagine they'll both win so in the winter TI all markets where there's a big money battle there could be a sinkhole for one of them and maybe not uh but maybe uh so and you would tip that one in Uber's favor
another one of our portfolio companies lift did um a great activation with Justin Bieber around the release of his new album ... it all also gave Lyft um a a a great marketing tool to reach this audience that you know didn't know about the company
And Lyft is trying to differentiate itself from Uber by being the um supporter of public transit rather than its killer.
I don't think that people are actually thinking through what the real business model is and what the leverage in the business model is clearly enough to work out that balance
the other option is oh we shouldn't be building and owning our own fleet we should be pushing for interoperability in self-driving cars and enabling hooks in our platform so that anybody with a self-driving car can provide a la Airbnb through our platform
they're either gonna have to figure out a bunch of very very hard math about how they're going to keep incentivizing human drivers to be part of the mix
so all of a sudden you go with self-driving cars you're gonna have to have enough cars for peak all of a sudden you're gonna have to have yeah if you're owning them all yeah
the essence of the on-demand model is that the two sides of the marketplace scale in tandem
there's been a lot of discussion in the media about how self-driving cars will make uber and lyft much more profitable and you'll read analysis that reads something like this you know well once you have self-driving cars they won't have to pay the percentage to the drivers they say about 25 percent the 75 percent they give to drivers right
the critical mass of drivers is possible also because of the augmentation provided by Google Maps
if you compare an uber or lyft driver to a taxi cab driver you know they don't have this magic Sixth Sense the taxi driver that says go two blocks over there's a passenger over there right they just drive around aimlessly looking for people
they have had to build a critical mass of drivers yep and a critical mass of passengers and so a big part of their expense of course has been actually building the matching marketplace yeah I'm matching an algorithmic matching marketplace is the heart of what they do
our uber and lyft simply borrowing from the future with this inflated valuation and the steady-state endgame will be that they will be a profitable sustainable company well they at some point flame out or will at some point have to raise their prices or you know and break the model but meanwhile they have this incredible currency where they can just swamp the market right
it's definitely pushing some some folks you know with something that would be a 12 or $13 per X ride is now $2 and you're having fun while you do it so there's definitely seriously definitely that piece to it all right
the average trip length for our products 2.6 miles so at that point that's really this isn't replacing walking trips that's a that's a car trip that's very from I understand pretty similar to to trip lengths of uber uber and lyft as well
I think for lyft it's more of a competitive advantage than a problem for yeah it's great if they go out first
surely one of them is going to buy you know you know bird lime one of them yep that seems I couldn't have ability I just think they're probably bad businesses and that makes sense to acquire them an additional capability to offer
I know that lyft I was listening to lift on the founder on how I built this he said you know lyft is what we're building is basically you know the future of Transport I mean it's not about cars it's about all this
my understanding is that a lot of the early employees who would have wanted access to liquidity probably already had some access to liquidity so it's unclear you know what the overall impact will be on kind of the local real estate market here
lifts filing may have been sort of a pre-emptive move ahead of uber
lift has filed quietly for their IPO and uber as well seems to have filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission
we have yet to see Oberon lift really put their foot down and compete aggressively with a company that is not offering a car service
lyft and Tesla are really interesting companies when it comes to mapping because they actually have millions of cars on the road now right and they have the destination people want to go and the starting point that's something that other people may not have
this is a big controversy say with uber and lyft now they're saying oh my god they're subsidizing the rides well if you think about it over left if it was one or two dollars more per ride would it make any difference on consumption probably very little because people are not going to walk in the rain you know the habits been formed
it's a billion dollar company
I don't think it would be here if it wasn't for you
nobody would invest in that company and I saw it clearly
uber and lyft were often below five minutes in almost every major American city
for uber and lyft partially because the network effect is so strong though on supply side they also knew they were in a race right and they use this thing that you know called blitzscaling
there are switching costs in this industry while people think Oh between uber and lyft you can just bounce back and forth yes somehow this became a duopoly... there is some switching cost
uber a lyft losing 50 cents or so a ride pretty easy to cut costs and raise prices and get there right you cut 25 cents in costs in the business provide and you add 50 cents each right now you got a really profitable business
it's actually kind of interesting that lift actually wound up catching up in some cases and some markets because they had such a disadvantage capitalized for so long
another common type of network effect you'll be familiar with is lyft where a bunch of drivers might get the app but that's kind of useless in fact they're competing with each other the more drivers there are the worse it is for you as a driver in a way because you can't get the revenue okay but all those drivers being there means that a bunch of riders are gonna come along and get the app themselves so they're gonna attract the riders and the riders will then end up paying and the more riders t
I think uber lyft post maids you know thumbtack have created some sort of a safety net for this gig economy job ... but we need to be careful not to take that too far and pretend that these are the jobs that we want our future economy to be made up of primarily and in fact at some point they're gonna automate the drivers away
I would argue that what uber and lyft are doing is getting you a car now it happens require a driver to get you from A to B but the point is that it's transporting you it's a capital asset this is why the experience is a commodity you don't choose the driver you want you say pick me up here I'm going there done and they just send you somebody
this is desperation when you have some it's kind of like why would anyone ever get a payday loan you know what the interest rates are in payday loans they're outrageous why would anyone ever do it this is a multi-billion dollar industry when you have an asset like a car and you need cash sometimes you will look at that equation and gonna do you know what it may be I'm deferring maintenance that maybe I'm running down my asset but that's tomorrow today I need 80 bucks so I'm gonna drive for uber
no one is taking home after expenses 12 to 20 bucks an hour there's been numerous studies on this basically everything hinges on the fact that you convince cake workers to run down the assets that they have you convinced them to run down the asset like their car the fur maintenance defer depreciation basically not dealing with any of the costs of actually you providing the service
even in the case where someone just works ten hours a week because they want to make some extra cash is utterly exploitive the fact that gig workers are not being paid for their expenses
the fact that gig workers are not being paid for their expenses the fact that they're not being paid while they're waiting between jobs I saw one study just come out was it last week about the fact that uber and lyft are majorly contributing to congestion in cities to to traffic because forty percent of the time spent working for these apps are spent without passengers in the car and that 40% of that hours they're not being paid for that hours
I think masa was going to make a bet in the u.s. so well the probability of us doing lyft prima facie was low if we didn't get uber we were gonna make a mobility play in the United States that's one line yeah 10 to 30 percent chance
there really only two players there was uber and there was left ... if you're the vision fund you don't need to play in second and third tier assets
Manu Kumar a canine ventures was a seed investor in Twilio Encarta and lyft and you know Twilio and and lyft are you know 10 billion plus dollar companies and he invested pretty much actually at the proceed stage
But then Lyft was giving $600. And then the drivers are smart. They're like, oh, you guys are idiots. I'm going to, next week I'm doing Lyft. The week after I'm doing Uber, I hit my incentive. I flip to the next person.
i don't think it's actually taking away from uber lyft i think it's just taking away from people driving any service driving themselves and that's what's going to go away as car ownership is going to go away to car rentals
Um, anyway, investors kind of agree with you. I, I was expecting this to trade up on the news, but lift's actually down a little bit today. And they're worth about 11 bucks a share down from a 52 week high of around 19. So not looking good for lift sadly. I want them to succeed. So I'm going to root for them here, but yeah, I can't really, uh,
Yeah, it's, it's, it's destined for failure.
what matters here is for Lyft, this is a billion dollars in, uh, yearly bookings. It's a lot of market share in Europe. And I believe it's also adjusted even a positive out of the gate, Jason. So it's not a profitability hit. It's expanding them and bringing more stuff into their orbit. If you're Lyft and you want to survive, maybe you still sink, but I can't fault them here. They, they really needed to have more than one market. Europe makes sense. Why not just buy into an existing functioning
Primetime pricing, TechCrunch is paraphrasing there, is a bad form of price raising, said Lyft's CEO. It is particularly bad because riders hate it with a fiery passion. And so we're really trying to get rid of it.
You have to understand the competitive landscape. The drivers want to maximize their earning potential. If you want to drive on a Friday or Saturday night, you have to deal with drunk passengers who might, you know, puke in your car or might be obnoxious. And you have to give up your Friday and Saturday night with your family, your loved ones. And so in order to get people to give up their Friday and Saturday night to drive Uber, you need to incentivize them or Lyft. If Uber if Lyft takes that o
It's a really stupid idea.
In its last quarterly earnings, I believe Lyft mentioned that it was looking at actually getting rid of surge pricing to boost its rider numbers. And I think last quarter, Lyft's revenue per rider decreased about 5% quarter over quarter.
the public benefits because Lyft got you a cheaper ride and they created the category of ride sharing
in a startup called lyft which got absolutely demolished by uber
i tend to be you know bullish on lyft long term i was on the board there for many years as we were brawling with uh with travis and crew over at uber
And that's why Uber won over and Lyft and DoorDash that whole group. Because they were so good to the drivers.
lyft did a 13 percent riff and let go of 700 employees uh 700 of its 4 000
And, uh, then I took the Lyft ride sharing and I was in a total panic cause we were only doing Lincoln town cars. And I said, well, with sidecar, I offered somebody $25 to take me from San Francisco to Santo road. And Uber would have been 75 lift was like 60 or 50. And this guy did it for 25, but I felt like I was going to die. Cause he was leaning so far back in the chair that I was having like a face-to-face conversation with them. Car smelled like weed. It was like scary. I was like, so that
So let's just take ride sharing. So it's certainly in, in the Bay area, it's a duopoly right now. Um, and that's because there's an asymptotic network effect.
this law will have very adverse consequences for their business.
the state is effectively capturing the excess return of Uber and Lyft.
it's not a real venture kind of business. And so you may be deficit financing it or building it in a very different way than we used to.
if you were comfortable with a 60% or 70% reduction in the market cap of some of these companies, you'd be okay with AB five.
the entire public markets who all of a sudden think that a business looks one way has to figure out that it's really a cost plus business.
it has huge operational implications and it has really terrible OPEX implications for a company
Because if you listen to the Lyft call, it was a train wreck.
So Lyft and everybody else could do diseconomic things.
I'm talking about Uber and Lyft and like hundreds of billions of dollars of money. Raised in the private market and shot onto the playing field out of a cannon. That's brutal.
