with weave, people do like the most amazing video and photo work. Uh and overall just like the the outcomes that are achievable with it are incredible.
we have products around that too. Like in Figma Design, you can have now generative tools and shaders where you can do very much that or we have a product called Weave. And weave is basically a nodebased system. You can connect model outputs into uh other inputs and such. And the whole idea is like it's not bad to generate with AI, but you need a way to craft that clay. You need a way to mold it.
Now if you're able to do both and that's what we're trying to enable in Figma make code a material on the canvas make it so that you can go start by building you can build to think if you like uh but also when you want to think and work with your hands you can do that too
And at Figma, we actually made it so that uh it was just a simple thing, but we said, 'Hey, if you are uh using AI in your writing of any kind, just put at the top written with AI.' Very simple, very easy to follow. Uh and you know, people made jokes about internally, but people do it. And it makes it so that we can all trust that when we see something, we know that it's been cared for enough that it's like worth your time to process.
I said the ceiling will be raised by AI. You'll be able to do greater things than me before. That was wrong. Uh the ceiling has stayed the same. AI is not raising the ceiling. Humans are raising the ceiling though.
I think that like it's it's sort of um not surprising that it wasn't an instant hit or something when there's actually quite a lot of work on the just core user journey workflow side that you have to do to meet the needs of professionals.
The reality is a tool like Figma, you know, has taken a very long time to build uh and a very long time to make sure that we get the workflows right for our users. And we still have work to do.
Yep. Um, no, it's been continuing to do well.
I want to say it was about 1100, 1200.
we just kept putting our foot in the gas. I mean, yeah, I thought it would be like sort of we would just go right through and as soon as a month or two in, it was clear that was not the case. It kind of became, okay, like we got to like really power through as an organization here and ship and build like the next stuff because if we don't power through and keep our foot on the gas, you know, what's on the other side? We don't know what's on the other side. Uh, we got to make sure everything's fi
we signed the agreement. We said yes. And then uh various world governments decided that they didn't like it, right? Like antitrust got involved and they blocked the deal.
we want to make it so that the best best teams in the world can design and create and build the world's best software. Uh we're also used for all sorts of stuff. So, marketing, uh, advertising, slides, whiteboarding, diagramming, uh, you know, you name it.
design is the new code. Uh and what's happening right now is as coding models get better, I'm not saying that you don't need engineers. We definitely need engineers at Figma. We love our engineers. But also the nature of programming is changing and as it changes the value is rising in terms of differentiation to the top, right? That's design, that's brand, it's marketing point of view. It's being bold. Uh and it's like the emotional reaction you're able to elicit.
at Figma, we actually made it so that it was just a simple thing. But we said, hey, if you are using AI in your writing of any kind, just put at the top written with AI.
But I think the most important part for us was that we just kept putting our foot in the gas. I mean, I thought it would be like sort of we would just go right through. And as soon as a month or two in, it was clear that was not the case. Yeah. It kind of became, okay, like we got to like really power through as an organization.
we started Figma back in August 2012. And the quick pitch is this is where we want to make it so that the best teams in the world can design and create and build the world's best software. We're also used for all sorts of stuff. So marketing, advertising, slides, whiteboarding, diagramming, you name it. Like if it's visual at all, someone's probably doing a Figma, even if it's not meant for that.
And in my point of view, the thing you'd expect me to say, too, is that design is the new code. And what's happening right now is, as coding models get better, I'm not saying that you don't need engineers. We definitely need engineers at Figma. We love our engineers. But also, the nature of programming is changing. And as it changes, the value is rising in terms of differentiation to the top. Right. That's design. That's brand. It's marketing. It's point of view. It's being bold. And it's like t
Figma as well. They don't trust the Frontier models. They think they're going to be competitors.
I don't think design is going away. I think we're just going to get more great design.
they're trading at like nine times sales uh or something in that range, which is pretty high multiple.
I like a founder company. I think the stock will be trading at 2x in 3 years. That's my guess right now.
they're up against Clawude Design. They're up against Gemini. They're up against Lovable. They're up against some serious competition
what Dylan did here with Figma saying, hey, I'm not going to take I think it's like a $50 million grant... he's signaling... that I'm not going to try to make an extra 2,3,4,5% on my net worth. I'm going to give that back to the shareholders and I'm going to show you how great this company is.
I got in at $22. So, I'm I'm basically uh at par right now. how I bought 4,500 shares
He points to $370 million in revenue in Q2. 48% year-over-year revenue growth rate. It's their third straight quarter of accelerated growth for Figma.
Co-founder and CEO Dylan Fields actually given up around $46 million in stock awards, which he was set to receive back in July in hopes of boosting investor confidence.
Figma down about 77% from its high of $122 set shortly after last year's public offering. It's at about $23.81 right now.
The whole point is like it's really like we want to give as much value as we possibly can.
We now have um 15 million monthly active users in 190 countries. were used in like 80% of Fortune 500 companies like just it's grown pretty rapidly and it's 500,000 paid users I read.
it valued the company at $2.5 billion dollars which makes you not only the most successful founder since Atlassian in Sydney.
Canva is a tool that allows anybody to become a graphic designer.
for a while not everybody um uh not everybody replaced Adobe or Sketch with it. Um but I feel good about that path now.
I think the team did a really good job of balancing, you know, in the in the road map, like feature parity of of being a complete um design tool uh and uh magical flourishes of like things you can only do in Figma
we did the series A in Figma and I would say it was um it it had a long road to get to like the feature parity you would need with existing design tools for it to become for for the experience to become mainstream enough that everybody began to see the power.
Figma is correct me if I'm wrong, but that was like kind of the side hustle software. Like people who used Figma was like for their side project, they were doing it like a solo version of it. And and that really became this bottom-up software movement, correct?
we were in in this company called Figma, right? Oh, that's the design software. Yeah, exactly. Um and if you have a bunch of designers either together remotely working with software engineers and product people and marketing, um like having a a amazing web-based real-time collaborative experience makes all the difference in the world.
we're thankful that so far business hasn't been impacted so yeah I've had a few deals like I said slow down a few deals have sped up but overall net it seems like things are growing roughly the same pass nice thing about having a subscription business I think your anti fragile
we're 160 people yeah having me you know with three people in Amsterdam we have a ten people ich that are remote maybe a bit more now of course we're all remote
you're actually becoming more anti fragile you're creating a community that's more loyal to you and you're working with them and partnering them for the long term to make the product that's best for them
one thing we're trying to have figmas talk more and create more of a movement around what we're calling open design and what is open design so basically open design is like a few different things one is how do I become in my organization how do I design do design more openly mm-hmm but also in the context of the world how do I have a design process that my users my customers can actually be part of right but doesn't any more transparent
one thing we do in our product process is try to just like get features out in front of the community as fast as we can not only not to just ship them but also just to get the feedback on them right but people can get that if you change stuff well it's less about managing people being upset and more about getting to the point where you're building the best product
slack is a gold standard they send you your monthly utilization every month yeah so I love that about selects the trust part
we're really trying to make sure that we're clear about that
I would give us like a I got b-minus c-plus right now on this and that's I'm a harsh grader for sure but yeah I definitely think there's things we can still do because we are doing them to make sure that we increase trust for customers and transparency
viewers are free and figma okay so editors are the only ones we charge for
we've definitely look to the model for figma and it's mean that I think could be really interesting to me incentivize the right behaviors
we don't do discounts yeah and certainly not at all
we haven't seen that yet cuz it's not shipped but that's my hope is that we'll start to see more of that
one thing that we're we've been working towards and we're gonna launch soon is the ability to also self-serve on to our highest here which right now you have to talk to a salesperson before right and so it's really important I think for a lot of companies to be able to like have that self-serve motion for every tier because it's not everyone wants to talk to a salesperson
we're seeing a range of behaviors right now there's definitely a ton of companies that need to spend multiple months or whatever evaluating software go through rigorous process especially at larger corporations and we've got a great amazing sales team that's like able to partner with them on that
we also see a lot of people spread figma when they change jobs um huh they'll bring it with them yes or you know people are hopping between jobs every few years and they're they're bringing the tools they like
figmas oriented towards beam and bottom-up model and we're trying to make the business as efficient as possible
we're still significantly cheaper than oh yeah what does it doe be charged for it's all over the place it's a month or something you probably have like a where you're only a few different apps yeah so there's like there's like a bundle where it's sort of like photography but over I think 10 bucks or something yeah but then there's other sort of just like an educational skew there's like a business skew there's like a you know skew for other stuff
so different tiers so that's free for individuals up to a few people got it so if like you're just like watching this or listening to this and you want to try it yeah there's a literally no downside if you get to the point where you're at a few editors $15 mode actually you can do multiplayer mode even when draft sometimes it gets to three people then we charge you for four basically since in fact 15 dollars a month per editor or $12 a month of the committee annually so it's essentially free 80
so in figma you just send them a link and that's kind of the beautiful part is like I can just send you a link to my document you can go be inside the document as a developer and you can then like measure distances of things you can export you know different areas of the of the product that you want to be able to use in code mmm you can actually export out and like read off CSS iOS you know Android code as well
I've also started to hear of a lot of different companies that I've talked with where it's like a first time founder or someone who's just kind of like starting off yeah and they are actually using figma from day one they have no design training but they've realized that this is the way they're going to fill up their app is in figma
we don't see canva as a competitor really mmm there hasn't been a single deal that we've ever like gone up against can before that I know of that's for civilians non-designers I mean we have a lot of non designers that use figma - okay designers I think potentially it's just different use cases that use the God for okay but we do see everything else you mentioned so we see Adobe all the time a variety of tools that we see you know illustrator Photoshop XD we see sketch we see envision and a lot
first and foremost I'll say that I think everyone's trying to make their things cheap and easy to use right now cheap and easy is yeah I think the goal for everyone in the space you know it's definitely been our intention from the start
figma is a way to collaboratively design applications websites got anything you want in the browser
yeah we're seeing people we've lots of different platforms whether it's Adobe or you know the competing platform our choice to adopt a cheaper computer we're seeing like our for figmas to make design accessible to everybody
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, I've, I've seen similar things, you know, companies like Figma, companies like linear, that's kind of blowing up right now. Those are very mature spaces with really good products in them. And so the, the bar for what you need in order to attract users is, is pretty high. So yeah, I think it's a growing sentiment amongst founders that just over time, even in general, across the, the, the software industry, user expectations are just continually rising.
So it's not like Figma and Adobe are not going to have endless, endless amounts of competition, but this is great for the market. Klarna on hold Figma going for it.
And there's going to obviously be Canva on one side, on the prosumer side, you got Figma on this side, and then you have the new entrant, which is AI. And there are going to be 10 AI companies that really, you know, are AI first attacking Figma lovable.
So what would be very nice here is if while we were talking, Figma was listening. So we didn't have to type in the prompts, it would just be kind of another participant in the meeting.
if you had an event planner, what you just did, I would say is the first half of what an event planner would do. Yeah. A full 50% of what an event planner would do is they would say, here are the things you need to address.
What it's doing right now, I believe is it's indexed the world's information like Google did. It's taken some web crawler, some people out there wrote, um, how to throw a conference medium posts, or, or answers, or Reddit threads, or where we've even published spreadsheets or something. So it's basically stealing content, liberating content, and then claiming it as its own and posting it up here for us to work with.
So this is really good work.
it's really incredible. They can do this for any type of, you know, workflow or brainstorming or product review or anything you need.
Like Dylan, right? Like for Figma. Okay. They blocked the acquisition. Dylan's still going to have an amazing company. He's still building said company. He's not going to sit there and going like, oh, wine wine. This didn't happen. No. It's like, okay, that's the, that's the current situation. We're building this company to be bigger and better than ever. Right. So huge respect to somebody like that.
That's companies like Rippling and Figma and others who've announced these sort of up rounds relative to what they've done before.
Figma was a hot company. Adobe won today because, well, it's crushing the game. And I would say eroding a good chunk of Adobe's market share today and also long-term cash flows.
I think it's overall a pretty strong number to start. I think Adobe was overpaying for the company to take it off the table.
Figma, of course, design unicorn, it's the vibe coding, it's the web design, it's that incredibly hot sector of startups that we talk about, I feel like just about every day. So Figma's in that range, they price to an initial IPO range of about $25 to $28 per share. Rencap calculates that at the midpoint of that range, their fully diluted market cap, somewhere in the $15.9 billion range. Now, that is less than Adobe wanted to buy the company for just a few years ago. So it's sort of a mixed sign
if you were an early stage investor in figma that probably returned your fund because it did so well you know good stuff
i ran it at today's market cap this morning so 48.8 billion not the peak that it reached on friday just trying to be fair here and that was irr with the additional time of 106 percent
in irr terms investors didn't do better if they bought it at the series c and sold at the ipo than they would have at the figma sorry at the adobe price but their total return was larger because it eventually uh became worth more money
i went back in time to the earliest time we could find figma's valuation which was its series uh it's only raised 40 million dollars at a 440 post pretty sure that was the series c so irr to september 2022 at the 20 billion dollar exit price would have been 187
a month now 20 million a month something like that so the the multiple will come down but it's in that it's in the line of overpaying on a multiple and it being worth it as we just broke down all right
so now that would be 400x last year's revenue but you would look at the run rate so what happened last month they gotta have twice as much
there's 6,300 people who we could probably just turn this on for and wow revenue comes pouring in so yes that does happen
index ventures led the seed at a 14.8 million dollar valuation uh so this is a 1351 x from the seed the total capital invested capital in the seed round was 3.8 million dollars
so you know how microsoft word single player you you edit the document you send everybody the document you get four copies of the document back you're like oh my god four different sets of edits yeah in figma it's live you're on the web you get a link you hit play and on your phone in the browser it looks like like the app so you can actually build an entire app in figma that's a click of what's called a clickable mock-up so then the ceo the sales team everybody can play with it and then you hol
figma is it's the software for creating mock-ups for ux and ui uh envision would be a contemporary so if you're designing something as a team your designers will make it in figma you can click on it so when i get a new version of inside when they do the job board at inside inside.com jobs they would send it to me in figma and we'd have conversations on it so it's collaboration around the production of web-based products iphone apps etc
now here now this would have come out of a 250 million dollar fund so the first 250 million would go to return the principal invested you'd have 750 million in gains from that fund just off this one investment let's assume all the other investments in the fund went to zero just a little back of the envelope math here 20 percent of 750 million 150 million for the partners five partners in the firm three partners well five partners in the front of that size uh five partners divided by 150 million
just keep in mind if those returns did not take their pro rata in other words they didn't keep investing and they did five rounds after that they did a b c d and e i think each of those rounds would dilute 10 you compound the 10 or even 20 you might have 50 of that so would net out to maybe a 200x return that means if you did put five million dollars in there you returned 200 times five million a billion dollars on a five million dollar investment it's a living it's a living
the markup from its series a pitchbook pegs the post money valuation of the figma series a at 48.3 million dollars and a pretty juicy series a at that and this makes for a 413x return at 20 million dollars
we go into the detail of how does adobe justify paying probably three or four hundred times revenue for this company
this is like startup fairy tale right now we just get to play the full prince charming startup dream from start to finish we're gonna go from we're gonna do the seed investor multiples all the way to the acquisition uh it's delightful
it will happen for the figma investors as well
i remember when we looked at figma figma yeah it all started with credit cards people buying it but now you saw people saying i want 5 000 licenses can you set a sales rep over holy cow we didn't have a salesman it was plg you know uh we better hire some enterprise sales reps and so yeah you've got to be careful in the enterprise of the low end selling to other tech companies or people trying things for the heck of it and you've got to look for those leading indicators you know a few companies s
so i think that's a pretty sound progression
so as we talked about they're at around 400 450 million of arr right now and then the left axis uh is expected value basically this was their uh valuation and it's it's in purple and it obviously goes up to the 20 billion or 22 billion that adobe just paid you can see e was the last round they did in 2021 where they were valued at 10 billion before that they were valued at 2 billion in 2020 and then you know the series c i think they were valued at like 440 million or something like that and the
they promise the founder that you'll be left alone that usually lasts two years that coincidentally that's usually the length of the the earn out or the the golden handcuffs
that die is sort of cast i think we're just debating the timeline in which it happens
i don't think that figma should do that here now that i've had a chance to think about it the reason is this that you have to think of pricing as not an element by itself but as sort of the most important element of a go-to-market strategy and there's no way that you can basically reprice figma completely as part of some other bundle and expect not to create massive disruption to your go-to-market organization
i think this thing is going to close i think it closes
i don't see how these things aren't competitors with each other to some degree
if you look at all of the stories around figma one of the most powerful things they did was basically allow people to use this for free effectively forever yeah bottom-up sass yeah and the problem with adobe is like that's a business model disruption that they could not afford in the public markets because if you condition a set of institutional investors to be expecting seven to eight billion dollars of annual free cash flow and all of a sudden you're willing to torch it to take a quarter of th
he basically the profile basically said that he was spending months and months going from office to office all around the world meeting customers sitting with customers reading trouble tickets that's what he would do you know reading help desk tickets about the product on vacation whenever you see a a ceo that is so customer obsessed typically there's good outcomes
huge kudos to the ceo and the team and the investors what an enormous win for all those folks that's awesome it keeps silicon valley kind of going right and that's just awesome to see these kind of big wins
adobe's paying 50 times current arr
the numbers i don't see a huge slowdown here um i mean look once the numbers get into the hundreds of millions it's really hard to maintain the same growth rate you're compounding off such a large base that it's just inevitable you can't keep growing 3x year over year once you're at 200 million of arr but the fact they got first from 23 to 77 and then 77 to 210 and now 210 they're at let's say they're at 400 now and they're going to be at 450 by the end of the year plus it's um it's pretty amazi
so my point is i've seen a lot of sas metrics and i can tell you this ar ramp is phenomenal you know i'm sure people have kind of heard about the triple triple double double that's kind of what vcs want you to do they want you to triple two years in a row then they want you to double two years in a row and so forth this company did way better than that i mean 700k to 4 million is a really fast ramp and then 4 million to 23 million is incredible that's like you know over a 5x and then they did ov
i think that's that's basically an overreaction i you know i know all the news is basically on how adobe is paying 50 times and that's no longer the multiple the multiple is more like you know eight nine ten times for high growth sas companies there is truth to that but but i think it misses some important details about how fast figma is growing
And I would imagine if I'm Adobe, and I'm looking at this Figma deal, do I keep fighting it? Or at this point, paying a billion dollars is probably net accretive to them, I think the stock price went up when they called the deal off. Which highlights that it was probably a better investment for them to say I'm going to pay a billion dollars to actually get out of this deal at this point.
I'm sure Adobe is not happy about the fact they got to pay a billion dollar breakup fee, which, by the way, was a really smart thing for Figma to negotiate.
limited partners who were expecting huge paydays from Figma being sold, uh, to Adobe are now back to a waiting game of figuring out if this company can go public, et cetera.
And I think that's, that's what's sort of interesting about this is you would normally think of these kinds of SaaS companies as well, they're it's adversarial. They want you to have more team members using more of their product for more time so that you're spending that much more on the product every month. And you can't extract your business sort of out of it. But I think, yeah, this is sort of like, well, what if we sort of played on a more of an even playing ground so that everybody felt goo
we've gone through like the SOC 2 process now, which is, it's basically a process to make sure that you're able to be as secure as possible, even though you're hosted in the cloud.
Your organization are able to adopt it and they're able to spread it without having to be to like necessarily get a lot of buy-in from others around them. ... we also see a lot of people spread Figma when they change jobs. They'll bring it with them.
and yet figma, you know, still very much a player in this world. Absolutely. I mean, they went public recently.
I've never been more confident in the role of design and the impact design can have. I wish designers felt the same confidence. This is the moment to be more bold, to take more creative risks, to double down on the power of design.
