gmail came out and boy was that spectacular... people actually didn't know whether we were kidding or not... it was a big debate if gmail was real... a gig inbox was unheard of at the time
over time google apps became the focus of the effort... it took us years to turn it into a real business product and such which it's become pretty big at now
the ads business was really in full bloom by then it was already more than a billion dollar business but they had this thing that they didn't quite know what to do with
