Ideally, I would need a platform that:

0. supports paid subscriptions

1. supports comments

2. has no *fixed* costs

3. allows *migrating* every post to a personal blog, after a month or so, leaving in the platform just a message like "this post is now available <here>

4. lets me say below each post or email "I also do other stuff, and you can support that other with donations"

IIUC, ONLY Substack checks the first 3 marks, but (even AFTER reading their Publisher Agreement) I am not sure if it allows n. 4 or not.

been writing on Substack for the last year, and from the beginning I've been aware that I might want to migrate to a different platform at some point. I've been looking into the various alternatives to Substack for a while, and always found it difficult to compare costs across the different platforms. There's just too many variables that factor into the cost, and each platform has a slightly different pricing scheme.

I've also been looking for the chance to try Streamlit, a Python library for making dashboards. Getting started with Streamlit was even easier than I imagined, so I ended up making a dashboard for comparing the costs of hosting a newsletter on each of five platforms: Ghost Pro, Buttondown, beehiiv, Substack, and ConvertKit. You can input the number of subscribers you need to support, the percentage of subscribers with a paid subscription, and the average annual revenue per paid subscriber.

If anyone here is thinking of starting a newsletter, or migrating to a different platform, you might find it helpful. If you've been curious about Streamlit, you might be interested as well. There's a link to the GitHub issue tracker, so if you find anything broken or inaccurate feel free to comment here or open an issue.

One thing that's interesting to see is how differently some of the pricing schemes behave at lower subscriber numbers, and lower annual revenue amounts. Someone with a large following and a large revenue base has a much different set of choices than someone with a small subscriber base and a lower ratio of paid subscribers.

Our goal is simply to figure out what AI can and cannot do, so that professors are better informed.

Our last entrant sent in an economics project for "Sex and Gender in the Economy." The assignment requires the student to read a book, formulate an economic hypothesis based on its themes, find five recent economics journal articles to support this hypothesis, and create an annotated bibliography analyzing them.

We used ChatGPT3.5, Consensus.app, Scribbr, ChatPDF, and Sayge to try to complete it. We ran into trouble finding appropriate journal articles (using these publicly available AI alone), as well as analyzing them. The other aspects were no trouble, and we explain why even these tricky aspects will be much less trouble with the AI tools coming down the pike.

Here are our takeaways for professors:

- Professors’ assignments should rely on unique and/or obscure content, and require students to find it and engage with what makes it unique.

- Professors should be thinking about field-specific standards that are challenging for AI tools to meet in completing their assignments.

- Crucially — and we cannot emphasize this enough — professors should experiment to see if they can get the latest integrated tools (whether ChatPDF or the paywalled ones) to generate responses that are sufficiently sensitive to their standards to receive good grades on their take-home written assignments. Experimentation is crucial now and will be even more crucial in the coming six months (mind you, we will be doing a lot of this experimentation, so stay tuned here for more updates).

- Professors should make their assignments multi-step, which increases the likelihood that a AI-related snafu is amplified into a problem with respect to their assignments’ rubrics.

- Seemingly, TurnItIn can be circumvented rather easily (though we will address this issue at greater length later this summer when we follow up on our prior post on Winston AI).

Why does this matter?

- ChatGPT has still managed to gain a remarkable level of popularity, despite low usage. This suggests that even though not many people are using it, they are aware of it and its potential capabilities. More people reported using ChatGPT for entertainment or to educate themselves rather than for work.
- People anticipate AI to have a greater impact on jobs such as software engineers, graphic designers, and journalists. But the expectation is that AI as a whole, not just ChatGPT, will be the driving force behind this.
- Concern about AI is increasing, not decreasing. 47% of respondents said AI makes them more worried than excited, comparing to 31% last year. This concern seems to rise with the level of AI knowledge one possesses.

Industries unshaken by AI:

- As per the survey, employed individuals who are aware of ChatGPT don't see it drastically affecting their jobs. The sectors like hospitality, entertainment, construction, and manufacturing feel the least threatened.

What led me to build this app was hitting a wall myself.

About 6 months ago, I started my solo founder journey.
The first two months were great—I was energized and productive.
But by month three, things started slipping. I was getting distracted, procrastinating, stuck in my own head.

I tried everything I could to get back on my feet:

* Working at the same time and place to reduce decision fatigue

* Breaking tasks into tiny steps, checking off each one to build momentum

* Pomodoro sessions + tiny rewards (like stretching or a sip of water) to stay focused

* Regular workouts to stabilize energy and mood

* Most importantly: shifting from willpower to systems

I realized: unless actions become automatic, it’s hard to keep going in the long run.

It took me about two months to rebuild a solid daily rhythm.
These small habit tweaks had a huge impact—more focus, more clarity, way better output.

Now I’m turning that low-friction, sustainable, anti-procrastination system into a simple, practical app.
No fluff, no hype—just one clear goal: make consistency easier.

We had dozens of moments where someone would say or discover something useful, and we’d think, “That should go into a module.” But of course, it never did.

So I’m thinking of building a system called Training on Tap [placeholder name].

Here’s the idea:

You speak to it, literally or figuratively. Paste some raw text, drop a voice note, or talk directly to the app. The system takes what you said and turns it into structured, internal training: modules, quizzes, updates, and certification flows. It’s like a living handbook that builds itself as you run your business.

The goal is to:

Let a single editor/creator control the knowledge stream

Auto-generate simple text-based lessons and follow-up quizzes

Track completions, issue internal certifications, and send follow-ups

Onboard new team members automatically by giving them the full backlog of training modules

Allow management to view organization-wide progress at a glance

Training content evolves over time. Three days after rolling something out, you’ll remember something important you forgot. You just send a voice note or paste in raw text, and the system figures out where it fits, updates the module, and sends a refreshed quiz to everyone who needs it. You never touch a slide deck again.

I’m not building it unless there’s actual demand. So:

Would this solve a real problem for you?

Am I overcomplicating it or missing something obvious?

If this existed, would you put your team on it?

Does it already exist, but in a format not suited to your environment/ecosystem?

If any of this resonates, I’ve got a waitlist up here: https://precision-drops.beehiiv.com/

I'm a co-founder of Roundups.ai

Just wanted to gauge the temperature for a "Substack for Products." We initially launched as a content play for bloggers trying to stay relevant in the age of AI with high value content and easy monetization, but with Google killing SEO, unless you have an existing blog and audience, you would have a mountain to climb to realize value from Roundups.

-- What does it do now? What could it do? ---

AI analyzes products and generates guides that influence buying decisions. Creators generate revenue when an audience gains insight and makes purchases.

So, our thinking is that if creators are embracing platforms like Substack and Behiiv where they can own their subscribers and remove SEO as a dependency for growth and engagement, there is market opportunity for a Substack for Product People.

---Why?---

Platforms like Mailchimp and Kit are for marketing funnels, and Substack and Beehiiv are for monetizing "prose" (people who want to monetize writing). Roundups would just hyper focus on product insights and curated recommendations. While you can copy and paste a Roundup into those platforms for distribution right now, those platforms have no content API's. Roundups could facilitate email distribution directly.

It wouldn't have all of the bells and whistles that those other email platforms have, but it doesn't need to. It would serve "Tastemakers" rather than writers. Here are some example use-case scenarios:

1. B2B software influencer -> "Three CRM tools you need right now!" -> broadcast to an email list.
2. Food influencer on instagram -> "My Top 5 Fav BBQ tools for summer 2025" -> broadcast to an email list
3 YouTuber toy reviewer -> "The 5 best plush toys for Christmas" -> broadcast to an email list

Obviously, with our existing product and marketplace integrations, it would be easy to facilitate "Sponsored Roundups" from brands, opening up additional monetization for creators beyond affiliate integrations we already have.

I wrote the Unvalidated Ideas newsletter (https://unvalidatedideas.com) for just over a year -- ~70 editions.

While I have something like 600+ ideas, turns out they're not all good enough to send (actually, more than 50% just weren't good enough!), so I eventually ran out of ideas. I shut down the newsletter, refunded every customer whether partially, and stopped making the paid ideas available.

One thing I promised to do when the newsletter ended was make a compendium of sorts with all the paid content that someone could download (a PDF eBook, essentially) for a fraction of what it would have cost to subscribe to the newsletter that long.

It took me a while (you wouldn't believe how hard it was to go from markdown to decent-looking eBook PDF) but I finally put it together -- the Unvalidated Ideas eBook 2023 Edition is here.

210 ideas, 351 pages all crammed into one eBook. If that sounds like something you'd like, check it out here:

https://unvalidatedideas.com

You can also still read the last free edition (and earlier ones!) here:

https://unvalidatedideas.com/editions/latest

It was a great ride (and my first successful newsletter), so it's hard to say goodbye to thousands of subscribers but I'm a strong believer in never selling email addresses (ads maybe, but never the actual email addresses), so the email list is just getting deleted.

For those who care, my stack that served 1000 < x < 2000 subscribers every week:

- Svelte + SvelteKit (i.e. Typescript + NodeJS)
- Listmonk (https://listmonk.app)
- SMTP (yup, selfhosted w/ Maddy https://maddy.email)

If/when I do it again (there's a new newsletter which is focused around businesses worth $5k to $50k that are good to buy), I'm going to use Substack/Beehiiv/Ghost, but it was fun to build the stack this time.
["story","author_hardwaresofton","story_38568960","show_hn
Hey HN,
