HN!
I built Rekapu to learn Polish after moving from Ukraine to Poland. The problem is - I work remotely for US companies in English, and most people around me speak English or I can use self-service checkouts, so there's basically zero pressure to actually learn. But I wanted to improve.
Being honest with myself, I had to acknowledge that with my cooked attention span, relying on willpower or strict schedules just wasn't going to work.
The insight: My most consistent habit is procrastinating on HN, Twitter, and news sites. It happens automatically every day, regardless of my mood or motivation. I don't plan these procrastination sessions - they just happen. So I thought: what if I couple learning with procrastination? Make it as small as possible - just one flashcard per session, get a small dopamine hit, and proceed.
How it works:
When you visit a blocked site, Rekapu shows you one flashcard. Answer it, get N minutes of access. Repeat. Unlike traditional blockers that redirect you to a new page (losing scroll position and context), Rekapu uses an overlay - after answering, you continue exactly where you left off.
And it felt good. Each procrastination session started feeling less guilty because at least I'm learning vocabulary and doing something good for myself every day without relying on willpower or motivation. It just happens natively. And it works so well for me that I keep using it, so I decided to share it.
Main features:
Spaced repetition (Again/Hard/Good/Easy ratings)
Import Anki .apkg decks with media
Google TTS support (BYOK) - great for languages
Cloze deletion cards
Activity streaks & daily goals
Everything stored locally (IndexedDB), no servers, no tracking
Tech: TypeScript, React + Chakra UI, IndexedDB. Landing built with Astro.

But I don't talk/write that much. Sometimes I don't feel that confident in my english knowledge.
Any good tips on how to be better at this? What I would ideally want is some kind of feedback mechanism that tells me when I made a mistake, for example in grammar.
What I can think of:
1) Grammarly - try to write notes in english and check text in Grammarly. But I don't like them having access to all keystrokes
2) Try to add a lot of stuff to Anki - I think a little bit to tedious
Ideally, I would have something like Clozemasters (by HN User) [1] but the database they use for english is pretty bad.
I am sure there are a lot of you for example from Europe or China that came up with some good solution to the problem of perfecting English

As a polyglot I've spend thousands of hours studying languages, and about half of those were spent dreaming of the 'perfect app'. I wanted spaced repetition that looked good, was less stressful to use, in an app that supported all my languages (including minority ones).
For the past two years I've been working on just such an application, Phrasing. I've now been using it daily for several months and it's ready to be shared.
Phrasing works with a concept called "Expressions". These are like flashcards on steroids: they're multilingual, interactive, heavily annotated and fully explained. Most importantly, they're interconnected, meaning all instances of a given word are linked. This means you can efficiently learn from long, complex sentences.
I recommend using the clozeword modality to learn the words. This will teach you them one at a time, and as you use phrasing, the algorithm will adapt to you and get downright addictive. I promise it's the most enjoyable SRS algorithm you'll ever use :)
HOW YOU CAN TRY PHRASING FOR FREE:
Free accounts officially aren't supported, but for now you can try Phrasing for free:
1. Find some free expressions: there are currently two ways to do this. Either from step four of the onboarding flow, or manually from one of the islands in the island tab (i.e. https://fluency.phrasing.app/@sterling/welcome-basics)
2. Bookmark the expression's translations: click on the bookmark in the lower left of the expression, and click on the translations you would like to learn (or click on "Learn all" to turn them all on)
3. Go learn! Open clozeword and try to guess/recall the word. If you don't know the word, just click reveal and try to remember it for next time!
4. Not a required step, but be sure to click on the shapes icon at some point :)
I'll be around to answer any questions in the comments! Enjoy

I've been using Anki to copy articles and create cloze deletions (where parts of the text are hidden and reviewed with spaced repetition) to build long-term memory. However, Anki struggles with large articles and lacks organization tools like file browsers.
I’m looking for ways to connect knowledge better, like rearranging ideas and linking concepts. Tools like Obsidian and Logseq are promising but feel restrictive with their markdown-based structure. While Obsidian has a canvas feature, it feels clunky compared to the freeform nature of OneNote. I’d prefer something more intuitive that allows rich-text editing and free dragging of elements.
I'm also wondering if a browser-based tool might work. Since Anki cards are HTML-based, with support for JavaScript, a web app with drag-and-drop for HTML elements might allow more complex card creation than markdown tools. This could integrate with Zotero and Hypothesis for seamless annotation and syncing to Anki.
What I’m Looking For:
Flexible tools for arranging and connecting knowledge (beyond markdown).
Browser-based solutions with drag-and-drop HTML functionality for Anki.
Customizable APIs to sync across tools like Zotero, Hypothesis, and Anki.
Hardware Question:
Does the Samsung S-Pen help with precise text selection for tools like Anki? I'm considering a Windows tablet for running the Anki desktop app, but I'm also curious if Samsung foldables with the S-Pen are a good alternative for productivity.
If anyone has experience with these tools or setups, I’d love your recommendations!

I've made an app for language learning with spaced repetition flashcards. It takes the all of the features that I've liked from other language learning apps, removes the ones I've disliked and puts them into one package.
- Cloze cards: Ich habe einen _____ (dog). - These types of cards work much better for more advanced words without 1:1 translations.
- Spaced repetition is fully adjustable - Most other apps would force me to use their fixed intervals. :(
- Words from content - My favorite way of learning is by watching YouTube videos in my target language, so I've added a youtube (and website) viewer to the app.
- Audio, images - Each card gets AI generated image and audio.
- Fast - To practice a card, you just tap it and swipe left/right. I was getting frustrated with childish exercises other apps were forcing me to do.
- No gamification - Yes, that's a feature. :D
- Aimed at advanced learners - A lot of apps end at B1 level (2000-3000), whereas to understand a language comfortably you need around 10 000 words, so the app aims at people who want to learn the final 7 000 words.
- Words are grouped correctly - The conjugations - gehen, gehe, geht, gehst... are all considered to be the same word. Surprisingly uncommon in the language learning app space.

In short, the Glossika service/app has taken a turn for the worse and I’m looking for something else.
I’ve used and recommended Glossika for the mass-sentence method of language acquisition.
Unfortunately Glossika seems to be enshittifying like everything else. The new app forces recording; doesn’t have a way to only listen and repeat (e.g., for practicing while driving in the car); doesn’t have a simple list of the sentences you’ve learned; and seems to be leaning into AI generated content. And there are hints that the old version will be going away. It’s a big bummer.
Does anyone have recommendations for the best place(s) to obtain:
- mass sentences (base language / target language pairs)
- curated for accuracy (not LLM-generated)
- with native audio (not TTS / computer generated)
- curated in a logical and efficient structure (like Glossika’s old presentation of roughly 7000 sentences, separated into A1–C1 levels, that efficiently present and reinforce key grammar and vocabulary for each language)?
- Bonus points for included IPA transcriptions.
- I’m open to paid services but happy to put together my own system with Mochi or Anki.
I’m aware of Tatoeba but hoping for something better structured (i.e., French A1, A2, etc.).
On the paid side, I’m aware of Clozemaster and Flexling.

I present to you "Lunchtime Broadcast", a walkaround-game (in the vein of Homestuck) where the mechanics are primarily walking your character around and talking to people in order to advance the plot. It's set in a fictional Korean high school, where you learn part of the vocabulary used in the webtoon "Sora & Haena!".
I am a big believer in comprehensible input, and so I had Claude come up with its own original story that teaches vocab from the webtoon's first 4 episodes, but is targeted to my intermediate-ish level. The hope is that after playing through "Lunchtime Broadcast", reading the webtoon should be much easier for me.
Notable Features :
- Built for phones but playable on desktop
- Every word in the dialogue is tappable and gives a definition Claude wrote in simpler Korean. English definitions are hidden behind a "?" icon
- There is a dictionary that shows words by how often or how recently you have tapped them
- Words that have been taught come up as multiple choice cloze review questions when you talk to characters. Many scenes have unique questions that use and quiz the taught vocabulary, even vocab from previous chapters
- As players progress, they unlock some culture and grammar notes (which I had Claude generate and then fact-check against online sources)
The development process (ongoing) involves me having Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT 6.1 Sol play through the chapters multiple times as a player in polishing passes, as well as feedback from me as I played through. I have currently only played completely through chapters 1 and 2, but there are 4 game chapters. The Korean lines were generated by Claude, not by native speakers, so there may be mistakes.

Hello! We have news to share — we've decided it's
time to close down the IRC and XMPP gateways to Slack.
After years of evolving, Slack is at the point where
the gateways can no longer handle all of our features
or security needs.
If you've been using the gateways for accessibility
reasons, we're glad to let you know that it's now
possible to navigate Slack by keyboard and with a
screen reader — and we're making more improvements
on a continual basis.
Still, we know this is a disruptive change, and we
want to help with this transition in any way we can.
Please follow this link to learn more about the
upcoming changes:
