SPEAKER_20: We are... in the news. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were held on Sunday.

SPEAKER_21: It was the most watched Grammy broadcast ever, with over 26 million viewers. They had more performances, shorter acceptance speeches,

SPEAKER_22: quite a few F-bombs, and no awards for Justin Bieber.

SPEAKER_25: Woo-hoo!

SPEAKER_00: Look, that's... it's probably causing a lot of mixed reactions. A lot of mainstream and tabloid media shows are saying Bieber was robbed and he deserved to win. There were other nominees that also deserved to win, and one of them was Esperanza Spaulding, and she just deserved to win just as much as the others, don't you think?

SPEAKER_13: Sure. I, you know, I didn't know who she was. A lot of people did it. I thought Bieber was a lock. I'm not personally a fan. He kind of freaks me out. The little guy. Yeah. So much success, but, you know, good for Esperanza.

SPEAKER_30: Yeah. She's kind of relatively unknown. She's more of a jazz artist.

SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing about Best New Artist. Once you're nominated, you can never be nominated again. So people are like, Justin Bieber was robbed. Come on, he's a kid. If all goes according to his management's plan, he's going to have a long career. He may be nominated for other awards. Or maybe not.

SPEAKER_33: He could be a flash in the pan, you're saying?

SPEAKER_00: Could be. But let's move on to some other winners. Lady Antebellum were the big winners of the night. They won six awards, and good on them. You know, I did see another tabloid show saying, oh, what are the surprise winners of the night? I'm like, really? No, they're actually really, really popular.

SPEAKER_35: Are they considered, like, country or new country?

SPEAKER_00: Kind of a crossover.

SPEAKER_35: Okay, like country pop. Right. Okay.

SPEAKER_00: Kind of like what Leanne Rimes was. Sure. You know, Taylor Swift. So I think it's great that they won. They write and sing their own music. Good thing they sing their own music. Eminem also won two awards. He was nominated for a total of nine, but two still pretty good. Sure. He didn't win Best Artist or Best Album of the Year, sorry. Arcade Fire won Album of the Year, which was a huge big deal for them. And they're, you know, still considered indie artists. They're from Canada, and they actually didn't have any speech prepared. So I think that was just a really great moment to see a band like that win.

SPEAKER_38: Yeah.

SPEAKER_25: So, yeah, what do you think? Okay, so let's talk about some standout performances. Do you have a favorite performance?

SPEAKER_21: I actually did watch them this year, and I thought it was absolutely entertaining.

SPEAKER_13: There wasn't a lot of artists that I personally liked a lot, but honestly, I did think that the show was pretty entertaining. Like, it was good. Yeah. You know, it kept me watching. Like, I don't know if it was the shortage of their speeches and all that. Yeah. But the guy that I liked a lot, or it was actually three people that sang, was Bruno Mars. Okay. I thought that that put together was pretty good. And I think, and I'm not 100% sure, that there's less lip syncing and dancing in shows and people really performing. And that, to me, is the organic rock and roll thing. You go, and you sing, and you play. Right. All the dancing and stuff kind of came, I don't know, with Madonna and Janet Jackson. Yeah. And there's a place for it, I suppose. Totally. Not really for me. So I do really appreciate when people go up there, and they sing, and they do it themselves. Yeah. So that's what I think I got from the Grammys this year.

SPEAKER_00: Right. My favorite performance was definitely the Abbott brothers, Mumford & Sons, and Bob Dylan. They were just absolutely great. There we go, Bob Dylan. Like, such a legend. He's just really cool. I didn't care so much for the opening number with Christina Aguilera, Florence Welch, and the other couple of, there's a picture of them right there, Jennifer Hudson. I just kind of thought, like, all right, Christina, you're overdoing it. You're kind of overcompensating for a Super Bowl thing. And then she fell on stage as well.

SPEAKER_51: She's becoming the new Mariah Carey. Yeah, she is. I'm obsessed with Christina Aguilera. Can somebody tweet that? I mean, she's messing up lyrics. She's blowing up like a hot air balloon, wiping out on stage because she's got vodka binges. She is my favorite person to watch right now.

SPEAKER_00: Well, she may be featured a lot in the news. And, of course, another standout performance was CeeLo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow doing Forget You.

SPEAKER_59: Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00: He gave Elton a run for his money with that costume. Look at that. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_59: Yeah, he sure did. And she was surprisingly fantastic.

SPEAKER_00: I was impressed by her because she did the performance on Glee singing Forget You. She also did Country Strong. She performed at the Country Music Awards. So I think a culmination of all those things gave her a great performance.

SPEAKER_61: Yeah. I mean, the only thing I ever used to like her for was her role in the Royal Tenenbaums.

SPEAKER_13: Then she kind of like snuck up on me in Iron Man a little bit. And I just wasn't prepared for that. I mean, she looked fantastic. She sounded fantastic. And she performed great.

SPEAKER_65: You know, I'm not a hater. If you show up and you do, you know, you deliver, I'm impressed.

SPEAKER_78: The head of Universal Music UK, David Joseph, says the music industry will survive the digital

SPEAKER_21: revolution. He says retail is a factor. You have to have places where you can buy music. The future of music lies in Spotify and other streaming services such as YouTube.

SPEAKER_81: We will see.

SPEAKER_83: Yes, we will. Now, we here in the U.S. don't have Spotify yet, but we do have Pandora, and they don't

SPEAKER_00: have that in a lot of European countries. You know, and this guy is saying for music services to succeed, they have to understand what the fans like and what the artists like, because it's not about the labels making money anymore. We've, like, fan revolt. We've taken the music industry back for ourselves, which is what it was all about. Us, the fans.

SPEAKER_39: Yeah, and Egypt took back their government on Facebook, so that can happen. I don't know how the record labels are going to survive.

SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, they'll have a place, but, you know, I don't know. And, I mean, this guy, David Joseph, broke multi-million selling acts from Lady Gaga, Florence Down the Machine, and Robbie Williams in the U.K., so he definitely knows what he's talking about. There's a huge music market over there, so it'll definitely be interesting, especially when Google Music comes out, all these music locker services happen, and, you know, it's going to be, like, whether it's going to be music in the cloud or subscription services, and we'll see how it goes.

SPEAKER_39: Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_94: Yeah, I have no idea what I'm talking about here.

SPEAKER_95: No, I'm just wondering how long has Bob Dylan been knocking on Heaven's door? Will someone please answer?

SPEAKER_97: Chatroom, look, this weekend, Will is saying give Egypt a Grammy. Hell yeah!

SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and, look, Robin Hart is saying Spotify is an iTunes killer. See, that's an interesting point of view, because how is iTunes going to survive when

SPEAKER_25: things like Spotify and other music services explode? Should we continue with the news?

SPEAKER_21: Anyway, Bob Dylan's acclaimed protest song, Blowing in the Wind, is to be published as a picture book. Sterling Children's Books' Vice President, Francis Gilbert, says,

SPEAKER_13: Bob Dylan's timeless message about war and peace is just as resonant with parents and children today as it was almost 50 years ago.

SPEAKER_00: Okay, I just want to say, I am going to buy this book. There's no question about it. I'm going to buy it. I love Bob Dylan, and I love Blowing in the Wind. It's a great song, so why wouldn't you buy it? I don't think you even have to be a child to read it. It's like Harry Potter.

SPEAKER_13: Yeah, it's iconic.

SPEAKER_87: He's iconic. It's a great message, and if it's holding up 50 years, you know, it's a pretty magical thing to do.

SPEAKER_56: I just think that a song like that that has such a strong message, which is so timeless, it should be, you know.

SPEAKER_22: It would be interesting, too. You know, I'd like to see this picture. Me, too. This little book here. A children's book. Yeah.

SPEAKER_98: And look, the other Dylan tracks to have received literary adaptations include 1974's Forever Young, Man Gave Names to All the Animals, and Blown in the Wind is

SPEAKER_21: Maybe we better write the Jesus candle right now. Okay, a lot of people are excited about this band, Radiohead. Now, Radiohead has finally announced their eighth full-length record. Woo-hoo! The King of Limbs, and an extravagantly packaged version of the record will be issued on May 9th. However, the music itself will effectively be issued on Saturday, February 19th, when

SPEAKER_81: digital downloads became available to those who made pre-orders.

SPEAKER_00: Hands up if you made a pre-order. There's a couple people in this studio that have. Someone, I can see his hand right there, have pre-ordered this.

SPEAKER_65: I'm raising my hand for Ian. Ian pre-ordered the Radiohead new record.

SPEAKER_00: This, look, there's a lot of different thoughts and opinions about this album that's coming out. One of them is that their previous release, In Rainbows, they said to fans and people, we want you to just pay what you want. But this time, they're going to, you know, they're controlling and monetizing its leak, which I think all artists should do anyway, so they can still earn a living off it. So, yeah, I think it'll be really cool. It'll be interesting to see how many people buy it. It'll be interesting to see if it'll be a number one record because Radiohead just have legions of fans around the world. But then you think about Taylor Swift's album Speak Now, which was a number one record. It only sold 52,000 at the beginning of the year. So how will Radiohead...

SPEAKER_117: Was that the opening week, too?

SPEAKER_00: It was.

SPEAKER_56: It's like the worst week for record sales.

SPEAKER_117: And Cake was the number one rock album, and they only sold 40,000.

SPEAKER_13: It's just, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_118: Yeah.

SPEAKER_13: I mean, is that, is that, and that's just physical, tangible CDs that you're buying.

SPEAKER_118: That's CD sales.

SPEAKER_120: Yeah, according to Billboard.

SPEAKER_13: Yeah, see, people are getting everything on, everyone's just getting everything on iTunes. That's it.

SPEAKER_00: Right. Well, I definitely think the album will do good anyway at do good. Do well because fans have been waiting for a long time for this album. I know we've talked about it a couple of times last year where they kept putting off the release date, but now all of a sudden it's here. It's being released like in two seconds. So fans get out there. You can pre-order it just like you can pre-order Lady Gaga's album.

SPEAKER_39: Well, good on you, Asha Kay. Yes.

SPEAKER_21: Someone who's not doing well or good, it's former Smashing Pumpkins bassist, D'Arcy Retsky. I think that you'll find that's just D'Arcy. Wow, oh, D'Arcy, yeah. Is it really? I think it's D'Arcy. She was sent to jail last Tuesday in Michigan due to an incident in which several horses on her farm broke free and ran amok in her town. D'Arcy, it's D'Arcy.

SPEAKER_30: It's D'Arcy. The apostrophe is silent.

SPEAKER_121: Is she French?

SPEAKER_30: I don't know.

SPEAKER_121: Are you sure?

SPEAKER_117: Forgive me this week in music. I'm so embarrassed.

SPEAKER_56: Now, this horse incident, I love this news item because it's so bizarre.

SPEAKER_00: The horse incident in question occurred in 2009, reports TMZ. Since when does TMZ report on the basis of Smashing Pumpkins? I don't know. But following neighbor's complaints, Retsky was ticketed for animals running at large. However, not only didn't she pay the ticket, but she missed four consecutive court dates.

SPEAKER_08: And lady, I'm telling you, you may have been in the Smashing Pumpkins, but you're not exempt from a bench warrant. And so there you go.

SPEAKER_129: Were they thoroughbred racehorses?

SPEAKER_08: I don't know.

SPEAKER_129: I mean, that is really bizarre story.

SPEAKER_130: I know, I know.

SPEAKER_131: It's a very bizarre story.

SPEAKER_56: Look, there's someone saying Tim has no culture. No, that's not true. He just, look how ethnic he looks today.

SPEAKER_133: I like Butter Bader. D-R-C. That's what I'm saying. Butter Bader.

SPEAKER_21: All right, it's 2011, and 2011 will be the year that defines the trajectory of digital music. The developments that everyone has been waiting for are on their way. In the past few months, launch dates for Spotify, Apple on the Cloud, Google Music, and Sony's Music Unlimited have been confirmed.

SPEAKER_00: Yes. Now, I know a lot of people, especially in the digital music community, have been waiting for this. So if you're interested in hearing, here are a couple of things. Spotify launch date in the coming months, no set date. Why it's exciting, it could help combat music piracy in a big way. It could make subscriptions more mainstream. It could make the URL the universal music format, which is crazy. Like a URL is a universal music format. So that's that. Apple in the Cloud launch date as early as June, they're saying. Let's see if we're going to hold them to that. Why it's exciting, Apple does everything in a big way. We all know that. Jobs has the money and the means behind him. They have the muscle to push music into the cloud. Once this happens, they may introduce their subscription service. And of course, social networking would be a key component. I think Apple can be like the paver of ways for many different music services. Sony Cloud launch date this quarter. Interesting. Why it's exciting, because Sony's Music Unlimited is backed by all four major labels. We'll have a 30-day trial period, which is longer than anyone in the market. And of course, Sony has a large technology case, including PSP, PlayStation, TVs, computers, and e-readers. So a lot of different ways to access Music Unlimited there. And finally, Google Music launch date months away, they're saying. No set date. Why it's exciting? Google Music will place much-needed legitimate search results in an engine that's known to drive piracy. Shame on you, Google. Google Music is rumored to feature cloud-based lockers, which is a huge component, and may even have a subscription element. Plus, while Apple has iPhone, Google has the mighty Android. So there's a few facts and figures about those subscription music services coming up. Keep an eye out for those. Pretty cool.

SPEAKER_139: Wow, yeah, it's a lot of stuff.

SPEAKER_13: All right. Well, sad but strange, an aspiring singer dies after a procedure to make her butt look like Beyonce's. British University student Claudia Adaromatimi, 20, died early Tuesday, more than 12 hours after paying a cut rate price of $3,000 after having a botched procedure by an unlicensed medical practitioner in a hotel room in Philadelphia. Is this a put on? No.

SPEAKER_142: That person is a transgender woman who lives in the Philadelphia area. What? Come on. Will, is this story for real or is this a put on because I'm the transgender from Philly?

SPEAKER_88: It's a true story.

SPEAKER_00: And apparently this girl from England, her boyfriend was explaining to the media she's had silicone injections before, but she thought they were too expensive and decided to go the cheaper route. But, you know, the thing that's crazy is that this transgender person in the Philly area doing this operation, did this transgender person operate on themselves and then thought, okay, I'm still alive. I can operate on someone else. Like, I don't understand how this person is getting away with this.

SPEAKER_11: Well, especially not now that this poor girl has died.

SPEAKER_13: I thought it was a put on. I cannot believe what I was reading. Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_21: I was like, Beyonce's butt, cut rate.

SPEAKER_151: Which is not that big. Nicki Minaj's is bigger.

SPEAKER_142: Transgendered woman, Philadelphia. I mean, that's terrible.

SPEAKER_00: It's really sad because this girl was only 20. She was a university student studying journalism. She had aspirations of being a singer, model, and actor. Okay, if you want to do those things, do that. Don't go and get plastic surgery. Like, that's not going to make you a better actor.

SPEAKER_25: But, I don't know, it's crazy. I hope that Beyonce hears about this story and, I don't know, does something.

SPEAKER_65: Those wild and crazy Canadians. I'll tell you. Songwriter of the Stars and former... It's not Canadian.

SPEAKER_155: She was British.

SPEAKER_65: Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_21: And former American Idol judge, Caradino Guardia, will release a memoir in 2011 titled, A Hell of a High Note. Surviving Life, Love, and American Idol, she left in somewhat mysterious circumstances at the end of Idol's 10th season. And now it looks like she wants to set the record.

SPEAKER_158: Yeah.

SPEAKER_21: She wants to set the record straight about what life was like under Simon Cowell.

SPEAKER_13: Pretty, pretty interesting stuff.

SPEAKER_160: Yes, it is. Okay.

SPEAKER_00: So, and now just last month, Dia Guardi also announced she will serve as a judge on a new reality show. It's a singer-songwriter competition called Going Platinum, which will air on the Bravo Network. I think that's more her thing. She's a songwriter. She's written songs for some of the biggest pop artists in the world, Gwen Stefani, Ashley Simpson, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera. The list just goes on and on.

SPEAKER_98: So, that would be pretty cool to see her there. But this news kind of broke on the back of Paula Abdul's CBS show, Lifted Dance, being axed after one season.

SPEAKER_136: Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_11: Yeah, which she was pretty devoid about.

SPEAKER_136: You know, I've met Caradino Guardia.

SPEAKER_164: It's not LaGuardia Airport. It's Dia Guardi.

SPEAKER_87: I love LaGuardia Airport, but I fly in the Newark. But I'll tell you what.

SPEAKER_165: Right.

SPEAKER_13: She is a good singer. Yeah. She's a good songwriter and a good performer. But she's so bitter that her career didn't take off. Yeah, I think so. And I felt that venom behind her judging on American Idol. Yeah. And it's like if it wasn't your time and it wasn't meant to be for you to be a star, you can't lash out at these kids. And they're kids that are trying to find their niche in the American Idol world. And I wasn't a big fan of her at all as a judge. So I don't know how this Bravo show is going to go because I believe that's why she got nixed. I'm not the only one that was feeling that from American Idol.

SPEAKER_160: Yeah, perhaps. You know, chat room, tell us what you think. Some people agree with you.

SPEAKER_00: You know, and one person was like, actually, Simpson doesn't write her own songs. Yeah, that's a newsflash. But yeah, I think you're right about Cara Dugati. Remember that girl who came in? She was wearing the bikini girl. And she sang one of Cara's songs that she wrote. She was like, I believe I can sing it better than you. Cara immediately stood up and got all flustered. She was like, no, I can sing it better. And she started to sing. It's like, why do you have to prove yourself? Yeah. You've got millions of dollars. You have your own studio. You write for all these artists. You don't need to prove anything.

SPEAKER_22: Yeah, I think that's going to be a chip on her shoulder for a long time.

SPEAKER_00: That is a really good point. I'm a huge fan of Cara's. I've been a huge fan of her for years and years. But you're right, as a judge, maybe not the most interesting person. But look, I'm kind of a little bit sad for Paula because she's a great judge. She's always good value no matter what substance she's on, including this segment we like to call Sue the Photographer. Check out this picture of the one, the only. Let's get that picture up, people. There it is. Oh, my God. This is Paula Abdul, reportedly really drunk when she's on G'day LA, a morning show on Fox here in LA, and she was, like, off her nut. She really was.

SPEAKER_184: Yeah, she was. She was drunk.

SPEAKER_00: And that wasn't, like, a put on, like, a wink. That was, like, there you go. Paula Abdul, we'll miss you, but I'm sure we'll see her back, too.

SPEAKER_98: They have a couple of different programs, such as the Grammy Foundation Education Camps, Grammy Camp, Grammy Jazz Ensembles, Grammy Signature Schools, Grammy Sound Checks, where

SPEAKER_00: they take people behind the scenes of a big artist show and see how they do a sound check. They select top students from schools and select them for jazz ensembles, things like that. They teach them about the music industry and the Grammy Camp. So it's definitely a great idea to teach people about the music industry and music as a whole and educate them the right way because it's a moving and changing business always.

SPEAKER_196: Yeah, for sure. It's cool.
