TypeSafe AI is an AI lab building machine-native intelligence infrastructure for automation, designed to make decisions within software by combining the intelligence of LLMs with the efficiency and reliability of code into a new shape of AI: System One Models. Based in San Francisco, TypeSafe AI recently launched its first public model, Jev.
While others chase benchmarks and academic puzzles, we’ve been quietly rethinking the LLM stack from first principles — building a new kind of general frontier model designed for real-world reliability, decision-making, and autonomy in production.
We’re a small, fast-moving team from OpenAI, Google Brain, and Meta/FAIR, backed by top-tier investors. Since mid-2024, we’ve been engineering the foundation for what comes after the current “state-of-the-art” — a model that actually gets things done.
We're looking for scrappy engineers who ship data-tooling interfaces fast. You will progress model intelligence through the interfaces, datasets, and evaluation tooling you build, combining product sense, data science, and engineering. You'll be part of the real \"secret sauce\" of TypeSafe: figuring out how our models can provide production-ready reliability in the real world.
Our tech stack is primarily Python. We also use TypeScript, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS for frontend, with Kubernetes for orchestration. We empower developers to use any tooling they find helpful for getting their job done, including Claude Code and Cursor.
Check out our team video: https://vimeo.com/1231083924/22b52f6b1d
Create high-leverage datasets, products, and user interfaces that unlock new capabilities and use cases on top of our model
Build internal data-tooling and evaluation interfaces — fast — that make model development clearer (evaluation, debugging, data inspection)
Develop and own evaluation frameworks to measure quality, reliability, and emergent characteristics across model iterations
Run rigorous analyses and experiments to understand how data, training choices, and targeted interventions impact model behavior
Turn raw model outputs and data into clear, inspectable UIs — owning a domain end-to-end, with craft and judgment over simple optimization
Partner closely with product managers and customers to translate real-world needs into concrete model and system improvements
Continuously iterate, learn, and co-discover new techniques for building exceptional, trustworthy AI products
Are generalists (~2–7 yrs) with solid fundamentals, strong coding ability, and product intuition
Maintain high attention to detail and a strong bar for quality
Enjoy thinking beyond the code to how systems are used in the real world
Are scrappy and hacky, and thrive in ambiguous problem spaces — taking satisfaction in finding creative solutions
Don't trust LLMs blindly — they look at the reality of model generations
Have hands-on experience implementing LLMs and understand their capabilities and limitations
We’re a small, flat, close-knit team working to make intelligence dependable enough to become part of everyday software. We work fully in person from our San Francisco office near Embarcadero station. We love what we do and care deeply about the work.
We strive for excellence and craftsmanship and won’t stop until we get there. When the team wins, we all win, and we enjoy collaborating and inspiring each other to grow—as a team and as individuals.
We value emotional honesty, kindness, and bringing your whole self to work. We build machines; we don’t try to be machines.
We want TypeSafe to be the place where you do the most impactful work of your career and help define our future as a company.

As a senior backend engineer, you will join the team responsible for building and maintaining TypeSafe's API platform for inference. These APIs will be user facing, latency sensitive, and (once we ship) have uptime, reliability and backwards compatibility requirements. You'll be wearing many different hats and working across different levels in our inference system, with particular depth in distributed systems and networking. Responsibilities include:
Define APIs for a new kind of AI inference experience and iterate on the design to ensure they are delightful to use
Create robust infrastructure for serving inference across multiple cloud providers
Define abstractions that will serve us moving forward as our billing needs and business logic needs grow
Work on exposing new model features to users
Our tech stack is primarily Python. We also use TypeScript, Next.js, and Tailwind CSS for frontend, with Kubernetes for orchestration. We empower developers to use any tooling they find helpful for getting their job done, including Claude Code and Codex.
Are responsible, ownership-inclined, and a team player – you believe there is no such thing as \"other people's code\", and will complain only the normal amount about pager duty
Have experience designing storage abstractions for scaled backend systems
Have experience designing resilient systems and improving on-call experience on production systems
Collaborate well with others on technical and product design, advocating for what you need, and adjusting specs to changing requirements and feedback
Are mission aligned and excited to go all-in
Love being part of a team
Have previously built big things
Have 5+ years of professional software engineering experience (3+ years of infra/backend) with a team with rigorous engineering standards
Have shipped backend services at scale with continuous delivery and uptime SLAs of at least 3 9s
Have designed and operated a developer-facing API service
Have experienced LLMs' capabilities and limitations from implementing them in the past

If you're an entrepreneurial builder of any kind — sales hustler, marketing demon, designer-of-worlds, something we can't even brainstorm in this list —don't let our lack of imagination stop you from introducing yourself.
Across any discipline, we are looking for people who
Are spiky in at least one domain and skillset, well-rounded in essential others, and have the self-awareness to know the difference
Show complete ownership — can think about goals on a strategic level and define what needs to happen toward that goal, rather than at the level of tasks or tickets

We're looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to build and operate the infrastructure behind TypeSafe AI's products at global scale. You'll own the systems that serve millions of users across regions — from provisioning Kubernetes clusters across multiple clouds to optimizing networking for low-latency AI inference.
This is a high-impact role on a small, fast-moving team. You'll work across the full infrastructure stack: cloud primitives, container orchestration, networking, observability, and the specialized infra that makes large-scale model inference efficient.
Design, deploy, and operate Kubernetes clusters across multiple regions and clouds
Build and maintain infrastructure for the platform that powers LLM inference workloads globally
Own networking, including VPCs, peering, load balancing, DNS, service mesh, CNI
Manage GPU infrastructure and autoscaling for ML workloads
Write and maintain infrastructure as code (Pulumi / Python)
Operate and improve observability: monitoring, alerting, tracing, logging
Deep experience with Kubernetes in production at scale: networking, storage, scheduling, upgrades
Strong background in AWS
Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (Pulumi, Terraform, or similar)
Solid understanding of Linux networking
Track record with high-traffic production ML systems
Programming fluency, Python preferred
Experience with large-scale LLM / ML inference infrastructure (GPU scheduling, model serving, vLLM, KubeRay, Kubernetes-native tooling)
Kubernetes networking depth with Cilium or other CNI plugins; service mesh (Istio, Envoy)
Multi-cloud infrastructure
Background in site reliability engineering including SLOs, incident response, capacity planning

We're looking for a safety researcher to join TypeSafe, get increasingly quiet in meetings, and quit about six weeks later because they're disturbed by what they've seen.
Build evals and investigate model behavior that concerns you.
Ask “should we?” in meetings scheduled to discuss “how soon?”
Keep a document that starts as “Initial observations” and ends as “For the record.”
Write a departure post that makes people concerned enough to share it, despite containing almost no information.
A strong research background in AI safety, alignment, interpretability, or model evaluation.
Experience raising concerns calmly, then in writing.
The ability to say “I can't discuss specifics” and somehow make things worse.
A sincere belief that you can change things from the inside. We'll need that for the first two weeks.
Weeks 1–2: Get set up, meet the team, and tell your friends the work is fascinating.
Weeks 3–4: Request additional access. Receive it. Stop telling friends about work.
Weeks 5–6: Write a long internal memo. Take a walk. Decide you won't be coming back on Monday.
You'll be working with people you'll later describe as “some of the most talented people I've ever worked with.”
To apply, submit a draft of your eventual resignation post. You may omit specifics.
