We are building an open-source Rust AI gateway. It is a decoupled gateway, so everything is a plugin, including different providers, protocols (MCP, voice), modalities (images, videos), and gateway features (fallbacks, PII redaction, smart routing).

Instead of packaging tons of providers and features into one gateway, Respan provides a small core and public interfaces that teams can use to assemble the AI infrastructure their application needs. That way, users can build their own features as additional plugins without having to change the gateway's core.

Here’s a video demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVv2ibXiTXM

There are countless LLM gateways and most of them solve a common problem: calling different providers from a single endpoint. However, adding new features can become prohibitively difficult. So developers can end up building another gateway to solve a specific problem.

We've been building our gateway based on LiteLLM since 2024, and now it's providing services for thousands of orgs. Each org needs different API key settings, routes, and limits. To support that, we kept wrapping LiteLLM, adding more features to it, and at one stage, our wrapper code exceeded 100,000 lines.

This January, a routine LiteLLM upgrade caused intermittent connection errors, and we had to roll back. We still haven't figured out the cause, but since then, we no longer upgrade LiteLLM directly and instead manually backport upstream fixes. These experiences made us realize that continuing to patch LiteLLM is not a sustainable long-term solution, and we had to redesign the gateway ourselves.

While redesigning our gateway, we wanted to make it easier to add features without breaking existing ones. Inspired by Nginx, we think an AI gateway should have a really small core, only responsible for dispatching events.

We believe that everything should be a plugin in our gateway, including providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini), protocols (chat, realtime voice, MCP), modalities (images, videos), and gateway features for reliability and security (smart routing, fallbacks, and PII redaction through example plugins). Beyond that, we want developers to be able to easily extend the gateway's capabilities by adding their own plugins, without touching the core. Adding a provider, even your own, is dead simple, because quirks are plugins too and there’s nothing magical about them. A provider is a short file, Mistral’s is 22 lines, and each quirk, like Groq putting token usage in its own field, gets its own test.

Respan Gateway does more than let you call Claude or Gemini models from the OpenAI SDK. It handles tools, images, and reasoning protocols automatically: an application based on the OpenAI Realtime API can also use Gemini Live through the gateway, though not every feature translates. A simple chat app can use MCP tools configured in the gateway, without implementing MCP itself.

We also parse requests into a shared structure. When the client and provider use the same API, we preserve provider-specific fields in their native format, even if our shared structure doesn't have a field for them. That way, the gateway can write them back instead of dropping them.

Here’s how it works:

An adapter hands each HTTP or WebSocket connection to the first client format that recognizes it. The format exposes the request as a two-way stream of typed input and output events. The core runs plugins in registration order, allowing them to choose a provider, filter or wrap either stream, make additional calls, return a response, or refuse the request. A provider format then opens the upstream connection.

If the client and provider use the same format and no plugin changes the payload, the original bytes and protocol-specific fields can pass through unchanged. When formats differ, they translate through shared types for messages, tool calls, results, streams, and usage. This stream model can represent both one-shot HTTP requests and long-lived bidirectional sessions.

The gateway is open source at https://github.com/respanai/respan-gateway under the MIT or Apache-2.0 license. You don't need to use Respan's hosted platform and can run it directly on your local machine. Build it from source, add your provider keys, and swap the base URL in a supported client. You can keep using the API your client already speaks. It's still pre-alpha.

We make money from our hosted platform (https://www.respan.ai/pricing), which runs the gateway for you with native observability and evals, along with unified billing.

If you’re building routing, tools, filtering, observability, or security for agents, we'd love to see it as a plugin. PLUGINS.md in the repo explains how to write one and links to the plugins we’ve created so far. Turning that into an ecosystem is basically our roadmap, and we welcome you to contribute your own plugins. We'd love to answer any questions and hear your feedback!

HN! Some more info: I’m an NHS doctor and the founder of Pi-A (https://www.pi-a.io) which developed Lungy (https://www.lungy.app). Lungy is an app (iOS only for now) that responds to breathing in real-time and was designed to make breathing exercises more engaging and beneficial to do. It hopefully has many aspects of interest to the HN community – real-time fluid, cloth and soft body sims running on the phone’s GPU.

My background is as a junior surgical trainee and I started building Lungy in 2020 during the first COVID lockdown in London. During COVID, there were huge numbers of patients coming off ventilators and they are often given breathing exercises on a worksheet and disposable plastic devices called incentive spirometers to encourage deep breathing. This is intended to prevent chest infections and strengthen breathing muscles that have weakened. I noticed often the incentive spirometer would sit by the bedside, whilst the patient would be on their phone – this was the spark that lead to Lungy!

The visuals are mostly built using Metal, with one or two using SpriteKit. There are 20 to choose from, including boids, cloth sims, fluid sims, a hacky DLA implementation, rigid body + soft body sims. The audio uses AudioKit with a polyphonic synth and a sequencer plays generated notes from a chosen scale (you can mess around with the sequencer and synth in Settings/Create Music).

There are obviously lots of breathing and meditation apps out there, I wanted Lungy to be different - it's about tuning into your surroundings and noticing the world around you, so all the visuals are nature-inspired or have some reference to the physical world. I didn’t like other apps required large downloads and/or a wifi connection, so Lungy’s download size is very small (<50MB), with no geometry, video or audio files.

Lungy is initially a wellness app, but I’d like to develop a medical device version for patients with breathing problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) & long COVID. use my own domain to host a simple homepage. I also use it as a custom mail domain.
Initially, I bought the domain on godaddy.com when I was getting into the realms of software engineering.
I always found the user interface hard to get used to, but it never bothered me enough for me to transfer my domain.
Especially because I run the DNS through Cloudlfare and, therefore, I have fairly little contact with the interface of godaddy.

Today Proton (my mail provider of choice) surprised me with a warning that there were problems with the setup of my domain. A quick research revealed that godaddy had cancelled my domain. It showed up in the Redemption Grace Period. This status code indicates that godaddy has asked the registry to delete my domain. After 30 calendar days + 5 days following the end of the redemption period, my domain is purged from the registry database and becomes available for registration.

I immediately contacted the godaddy support hotline. Mainly because of my mail account and the services connected to it. They confirmed the termination. The reason given was that I had failed to respond to an e-mail - that was sent yesterday on a Sunday(!) at 9:51 PM. Then at 0 o'clock my domain was terminated. So I had a breathtaking 2 hours to respond. Which is especially fun because I go to bed at 10pm. :-D

To make matters worse, the mail ended up in the spam folder because Godaddy's reputation seems to be bad and was titled: "Update your privacy settings and personal information.". Even under normal circumstances, I would have ignored this email. How should someone suspect that in a few minutes from now on the own domain is going to be killed.

If I understood the service employee correctly, this mail means that something was wrong with my payment data. And indeed, there was an old credit card on file. However, a PayPal address was also stored there, which still worked. Via this address, I was later even debited the penalty fees that I supposedly had to pay.

After some back and forth with service, I was then given an ultimatum: Either I pay €150 fine, allegedly required by my government to be charged for domains that enter the grace period. Or I lose the domain.

The latter didn't sound very inviting, as I like my domain and also don't feel like switching all accounts to another domain/provider. So I paid the fee.

Godaddy confirmed afterwards that there were no further emails or announcements. The service employee even confirmed by phone that apart from the mail and the subsequent generous transition period of 2 hours, there would have been no further information.

TL:DR If you have a domain with Godaddy, just make sure that the payment information is correct. Otherwise, it might get expensive.
["respan
Tell HN: Godaddy canceled my domain, gave me 2h to respond, then charged €150
story","author_M0r13n","story_32470017","ask_hn
M0r13n
32470116,32470122,32470136,32470138,32470148,32470158,32470160,32470164,32470165,32470191,32470198,32470211,32470225,32470226,32470242,32470246,32470256,32470260,32470266,32470268,32470272,32470295,32470316,32470342,32470346,32470398,32470434,32470437,32470467,32470487,32470506,32470523,32470567,32470593,32470702,32470755,32470775,32470870,32470953,32470960,32470967,32471072,32471079,32471184,32471204,32471253,32471269,32471285,32471341,32471359,32471428,32471520,32471561,32471564,32471617,32471648,32471686,32471772,32471786,32471787,32471866,32471883,32471888,32471925,32471963,32471984,32472008,32472121,32472325,32472360,32472451,32472507,32472723,32473181,32473301,32474869,32476040,32478493,32482451,32495658,32500090
I use my own domain to host a simple homepage.
