I interview regularly, so I am used to many types of processes, feedback mechanisms, and so on. I won't go into details about the questions because there's nothing special about them, but I wanted to share some details of my experience for people thinking of interviewing there.
1) About 35-40% of the interviewers started their questioning by saying "I will only need 20 minutes for this", while emphasizing it is an important leadership position that they are hiring for. So 20 minutes is all needed to identify "important, critical leaders"? What a strange thing to say - also a GREAT way to make candidates feel important and wanted!
2) There is significant shuffling of interviewers and schedules. One almost has to be on-call to be able to react quickly.
3) For an engineering manager position, I only interviewed with only technical person. To me it hints that Engineering MoM is not a very technical position.
4) Of all the people I spoke to, the hiring manager was the one I spoke the least with. The phone screen was one of the "I only need 20 minutes for this" calls. The other one was quite amusing, and is described below.
5) After the loop was done, the recruiter called me to congratulate me on passing, and started discussing details of the offer, including sending me a document described the equity program. Recruiter mentioned that the hiring manager would be calling me to discuss the position next.
6) SURPRISE INTERVIEW! I get a call from the hiring manager, he congratulates me on passing the loop, then as I prepare to ask questions about the role, he again says "I need to ask you two questions and need 20 minutes for this". Then proceeds to ask two random questions about platforms and process enforcement, then hangs up the call after I answer. Tells me he'd be calling in a week to discuss the position.
7) I get asked for references.
8) After passing the loop, have the recruiter discuss some details of the offer, have the hiring manager tell me they'd be calling me after a week, I get ghosted for about 3.5 weeks. References are contacted and feedback is confirmed positive.
9) I ping the recruiter to see when the offer is coming - it's not coming. They chose another candidate. I am fine with it, even after being offered verbally, but the ghosting part after wasting so much of my time seems almost intentional.
10) I call up a senior leader in the office I applied to, an acquaintance of mine. His answer: "don't come. It's a mess and a revolving door of people". I was shocked with the response.
11) I get called by the recruiter saying that another director saw my feedback and is very interested in talking to me and do an interview loop.
Guess I'm not joining, then.
I am ok with passing loops, being rejected, I've seen it all. But being ghosted after acceptance is a first. 3 weeks ago, I woke up to a pissed off customer telling me her payments were broken. My startup uses Stripe Connect to accept payments on behalf of our clients, and when I looked into it, I found that Stripe had decided to deactivate her account. Reason listed: 'Other'.
Great.
I contact Stripe via chat, and I learn nothing. Frontline support says "we'll look into it." Days go by, still nothing. Meanwhile, this customer is losing a massive amount of business and suffering.
After a few days, my team and I go at them from as many angles as possible. We're on the phone, we're on Twitter, we're reaching out to connections who work there / used to work there, and of course, we reach out to patio11. All of these support channels give us nothing except "we've got a team looking into it". But Stripe's frontline seems to be prohibited from offering any other info, I assume for liability reasons. "We wouldn't want to accidentally tell you the reason this happened, and have it be a bad one."
We ask:
1. Why was this account flagged?
"I don't have that information"
2. What can we do to get this fixed?
"I don't have access to that information.
3. Who does?
"I don't have access to that information"
4. What can you do about this?
"I've escalated your case. It's being reviewed."
I should mention at this point that I've been running this business since 2016, my customers have been more or less the same since then, and I've had (back when it was apparently possible) several phone conversations with Stripe staff about my business model. They know exactly who our customers are and what services we offer, and have approved it as such.
After a week of templated email responses and endless anxiety, we finally got an email from Stripe letting us know that they had reviewed the account and reactivated it. We never got a reason for why any of this had happened, despite asking for one multiple times. Oh well, still good news right? Except nope, this was only the beginning.
This morning I woke up to an email that about 35% of my client accounts had been deactivated and were "Under review", the kicker here being that one of those accounts is the same one they already reviewed last week! This is either the work of incompetent staff or (more likely) a bad algorithm. No reasonable human could make this mistake after last week's drama.
So currently, my product doesn't work for 35% of my customers. Cue torrent of pissed off customer emails.
And the best part is, this time I have an email from Stripe this time: Apparently these accounts are being flagged, despite the notes on our file, and despite the review completed literally last week, as not in compliance with Stripe's ToS. They suggest that if I believe this was done in error, I should reach out to customer support. Oh, you mean the same customer support that can't give me literally any information at all other than "We have a team looking into it"? The same customer support that won't give me any estimates as to how long it's going to take to put this fire out? The same customer support that literally looked into this a week ago and found no issues!?
I feel like I'm going crazy over here. These accounts have hundreds of thousands of dollars in them being held hostage by an utterly incompetent team / algorithm that seems to lack any and all empathy for the havoc they wreak on businesses when they pull the rug out from under them with no warning, nor for the impact they have on customers when they all of a sudden lose all ability to make money. And all that for an account that has been using Stripe for nearly 7 years without issue!
This goes so far beyond "customer support declining at scale." If lack of customer support means that critical integrations start to fail, that's not a customer support failure, that's a fundamental business failure.
["stripe
Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
story","author_yaythefuture","story_32854528","ask_hn
yaythefuture
32854611,32854612,32854631,32854665,32854730,32854732,32854755,32854769,32854797,32854800,32854806,32854831,32854847,32854855,32854861,32854882,32854887,32854896,32854915,32854941,32854951,32854960,32854985,32854986,32854995,32855089,32855094,32855101,32855106,32855115,32855134,32855155,32855161,32855186,32855221,32855250,32855288,32855306,32855312,32855370,32855382,32855392,32855400,32855401,32855402,32855509,32855513,32855524,32855526,32855530,32855559,32855591,32855657,32855675,32855676,32855792,32855799,32855805,32855811,32855857,32855923,32855938,32856065,32856067,32856112,32856332,32856338,32856466,32856521,32856634,32857079,32857201,32857251,32857307,32857347,32857604,32857645,32857684,32857833,32857873,32857938,32858040,32858054,32858138,32858149,32858222,32858606,32858892,32859026,32859131,32859147,32859271,32859295,32859682,32859691,32859762,32859906,32860192,32860648,32860659,32860723,32860816,32860923,32861064,32861716,32861842,32862413,32862525,32862842,32863046,32863188,32863189,32863213,32863317,32863328,32863395,32871767,32872211,32929043,33000596
Saw https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32261868 from a couple weeks ago and figured I'd share my own story.

Stripe has decided to nuke my entire I am only writing this post because Stripe are not responding to my emails.
I started using Stripe last month and everything was going smoothly. However, this week they sent me an email saying:
"Stripe provides a service between banks and our users. In order to provide service to our users, we are urged by our banking partners to keep an eye on all accounts that sign up for our services. We've noticed that you have processed charges that seem to be unauthorized--in order to make charges with credit and debit cards, the owner of the card must consent to the charge. Charges on your account do seem to lack this consent, which unfortunately means that we will no longer be able to offer service"
This makes no sense as I have had hundreds of payments and not a single payment has been disputed. So how could it be true that the payments are unauthorised? I have sent Stripe emails explaining this and they will not respond.
I am very disappointed. As a member of this community I assumed Stripe would treat developers making a living online with a little more respect. I plan to write a lengthy blog post explaining this in more depth.
Update: I am currently in contact with Stripe CEO over email. He is dealing with the issue. I will keep everyone updated.
["stripe
Stripe Is the New PayPal
story","author_disappointeddev","story_9738717","ask_hn
disappointeddev
9738879,9738883,9738887,9738935,9738937,9738942,9738950,9738994,9739012,9739034,9739051,9739053,9739065,9739076,9739077,9739078,9739107,9739169,9739209,9739227,9739239,9739246,9739247,9739249,9739252,9739280,9739290,9739354,9739389,9739415,9739449,9739476,9739486,9739488,9739509,9739549,9739570,9739611,9739628,9739635,9739666,9739694,9739712,9739748,9739753,9739797,9739852,9740351,9740524,9740563,9740840,9741048,9741299,9746436,9786533
Dear HN,

TLDR: Don't even have Stripe as an option for Shopify users or we'll boot you. Also backpay since Jan 2019.
"At Shopify, it is critical to maintain high trust and integrity within the Shopify App Store, so merchants have a reliable place to find solutions to grow their business.
During a routine investigation, Partner Governance identified your app [our app] as offering external billing for Shopify merchants and not using the Billing API for all payments.
[a couple of images of our cart]
As you are aware, all paid apps are required to use our Billing API, as noted in our Partner Program Agreement (Section 3.2 Payments, Point 5) unless express permission is granted by Shopify.
Payment information should not be obtained from the merchant directly and all charges should be processed through the billing API.
We require that you make the required changes as soon as possible to ensure all future payments are handled through our billing API. This would include redirecting any current merchants to select their plan and re-approve the new subscription through the Billing API and ensuring that all new merchants are billed through the API.
Shopify has also recently rolled out an annual subscription feature on the Billing API that makes the yearly subscription event easier on the API.
Additionally, we will require a report of the merchants who have been billed outside of the Billing API and retroactive revenue share payment for any/all qualifying 20% revenue dated January 2019 - Present.
Once the report has been reviewed, we will reach out with next steps on how to submit the transfer of funds to Shopify via wire transfer."

(my cofounder and I) have built several startups previously and spent an unnecessary amount of effort on auth. This led us to build an open source alternative to Auth0 and AWS Cognito, that’s called SuperTokens. We’ve spoken to 100s of developers and startups to understand the pain points with current services and we hope you find this useful!
Why did we build this?
To be able to control our user data and have it stored in our own database.
Have certain customisations that other identity providers do not offer
We couldn’t afford to pay
It took too long to understand the documentation of alternate service providers
How are we any easier?
We think that Auth0, Firebase etc are great services but auth is complex. There are many different use cases for different types of apps. Since services have to cater to each of these, they tend to become complex in their implementation (due to no fault of their own).
SuperTokens takes a modular approach - making it possible to pick only the features you need for your use case. This means you need not worry about complications associated with other features (eg: SSO and OAuth if you don’t need it) and this in turn makes it easier to implement and manage SuperTokens.
We are still early in the journey and working hard on building more functionality.
